Anglia Ruskin University - Department of the Built Environment
 --NEW URL-- http://www.anglia.ac.uk/ruskin/en/home/faculties/fst/departments/builtenv.html

These pages for the Department of the Built Environment at Anglia Ruskin University (formerly Anglia Polytechnic University/APU) feature details about undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the fields of Architecture, Civil Engineering, Construction and Surveying, together with information about staff and research. A built environment reading list includes recommended texts for the Department's modules, but is useful for anyone doing work around those themes. [GAS, 25 Oct 2006].

Architectural Association School of Architecture
 http://www.aaschool.ac.uk/

The Architectural Association was established in 1847 as a forum for architectural debate and reform. Over 150 years later it remains a vibrant venue for architects' lectures and exhibitions in London, and runs one of the world's leading schools of architecture. The site is attractive in a typically 'architectural' way (lots of white space everywhere), although it has recently been redesigned using Flash - the visual effects are undoubtedly impressive, though perhaps not really necessary. However, the wealth of useful information on the site is clearly organised into three main sections - 'Programmes' (information about the AA School); 'Events' (lectures and exhibitions); and 'Resources' (including publications), together with information about Association membership. Digital Architecture - University of Newcastle upon Tyne
 http://www.apl.ncl.ac.uk/digarch/

The University of Newcastle's MSc in Digital Architecture is described as "a new exhaustive course dealing with ICT innovation in Architecture and the Built Environment... [which] aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experience required to apply digital theories and technologies in their professional careers and to contribute to research in the field of digital architecture". The site is quite small, but attractively designed and laid out, with good use of colour coding. Sections provide information about the course and its modules; contacts; how to apply; and a 'graduates area' featuring student testimonials and work, including some excellent 'virtual tours'. Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design
 http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/as/ald/

Based at Leeds Metropolitan University, the Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design has over 900 students studying full and part time with an academic and support staff of nearly 50. Originating as part of the Government School of Design in the 1850s, the School describes itself as "proud of this long tradition of creative endeavour"; today, it "builds on traditional practice and embraces new media and technologies". The site provides a basic introduction to the School, with some interesting news stories, and profiles of former students. Much of the useful content is hosted elsewhere, however, with links to dedicated sites for each of the School's subject areas (including Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Garden Art and Design, Environmental Design, Design, and Design Culture), while the School's research is also covered on a separate site. Lincoln School of Architecture
 http://www.lincoln.ac.uk/arc/

The Lincoln School of Architecture (LSA) is located close to the centre of the city of Lincoln, sited in a new £10.5 million purpose-built facility designed by the world renowned architect Rick Mather. Formerly the Hull School of Architecture, the School's origins date back to the 1930s when Sir Lesley Martin was its first principal. Since that time, the School states that "it has established an international reputation for the study of Architecture, Museum and Exhibition Design, and Interior Design". The School's website is elegantly designed and simple to use - sections provide background about the School, details of its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and a series of useful staff profiles. However, the absence of any information about the School's research activity is disappointing. [GAS, 7 Jul 2006].

The Manchester School of Architecture
 http://www.msa.mmu.ac.uk/

The site is well-organised and neatly designed, with details of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees offered by the School, information about research and consultancy, and a list of staff members. Dedicated pages for the School's specialist 'Colleges' - covering Bioclimatic Architecture, Continuity in Architecture, Landscape and Urbanism, Materiality - contain some particularly rich and interesting material. http://www.rgu.ac.uk/sss/

The Scott Sutherland School at The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen "prides itself in the development of innovative courses that address the future needs of practice and which challenge out-moded conventions". The School's site is attractive and reasonably informative, with sections covering staff, (out of date) news and events, research, and its undergraduate and postgraduate courses in architecture, architectural technology, construction management and surveying. A links section features relevant construction and architecture sites. [GAS, 10 Sep 2005].

Describing itself as "one of the foremost centres for art, design and media education", BIAD offers a wide portfolio of courses including architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and fine art. University of Dundee - School of Architecture
 http://www.architecture.dundee.ac.uk/

According to the site, "Dundee School of Architecture students benefit from the experience of being located within a faculty which is dedicated to the highest standards of design in all fields". The School "aims to educate resourceful and adaptable architects who are able to respond creatively and responsibly to the demands of a complex and changing profession. We achieve this by providing a supportive learning environment which fosters a spirit of independent enquiry and individual enterprise. This is enriched by on-going research, all of which gives the students an understanding of the theory and purpose of the best design practice and the self confidence to participate in it". The design of the School's site is bold and modern, benefiting from a look that is entirely distinctive from the main University pages. Illustrated sections provide basic information about courses, staff and research. [GAS, 11 Sep 2005].

Recently redesigned with a much warmer interface than previously, the site features up-to-date news from the School, together with information about courses, research and staff. [GAS, 7 Jul 2006].

University of Texas at Austin - School of Architecture
 http://wnt.utexas.edu/architecture/

This redesigned site offers information on academic programmes at the UT-Austin School of Architecture - as well as architecture, these include historic preservation, sustainable design, architectural history, urban design, community and regional planning, interior design and landscape architecture. Other sections provide information about staff, events, resources, and a useful research and publications section, featuring the online journal Planning Forum. The design of the site is reasonably attractive, though many of the deeper pages are inconsistent in their format; furthermore, the frequent use of images as internal links (with no text alternatives) is poor in terms of accessibility. University of the West of England - School of Planning & Architecture
 http://www.built-environment.uwe.ac.uk/schools/pa/

Part of UWE's Faculty of the Built Environment, The School of Planning & Architecture describes itself as "dedicated to top quality education, training and research in the areas of town planning, urban design and architecture". The site offers information about the School, including courses, staff, research, field courses and exchange visits. It all looks very professional, but reads rather like an online prospectus - there are no added resources here, such as useful links or downloadable publications. [GAS, 2 Oct 2006].

University of Toronto: Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design
 http://www.ald.utoronto.ca/

According to the site's welcome page, the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design "offers rigorous programmes of study for the emerging architect, landscape architect or urban designer". The site has been completely redesigned using Flash, and looks, well, very flash... however, beneath the gloss there is a lot of good content here. The site is clearly organised, and has all the information you would expect about admissions, courses, programmes, events, together with a resources section and an impressive gallery of student work. The Flash - though attractively used - can slow things down though, and on a slower connection the constant 'loading' messages do begin to annoy. As always, an HTML alternative would be a worthwhile addition. [GAS, 24 Aug 2006].
