The Gateshead Millennium Bridge has been lifted into place across the River Tyne today, after being delayed for a couple of weeks due to the poor weather. It really was a fantastic sight to see the bridge carried along the Tyne by the world's largest floating crane, Asian Hercules II, from the AMEC construction yard in Wallsend, and then lifted into place across the river. I took lots of photographs of the operation to lift the bridge into place, and will make these available on the Web in due course.
When the bridge opens in April it will provide a pedestrian and cycle link between the Newcastle Quayside and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art on Gateshead Quays. Designed to blink like an eye in order to let boats pass beneath it, this is the world's first rotating bridge.
