Action for Market Towns describes itself as "the national membership organisation dedicated to promote the vitality and viability of small towns; support and assist small towns in tackling the challenges they face; and provide a national focus for action on issues affecting small towns". The site is neatly laid out with useful and up-to-date information, including articles, news and events, responses to Government consultation papers, details of publications, and a page of useful links. A registered charity, the Ancient Monuments Society has campaigned since 1924 for historic buildings of all ages and all types. The Society is a mandatory consultee on listed building consent, meaning that it plays a key role in shaping the historic environment in England and Wales. The website of the AMS is neatly organised, giving a broad background to its work, information on events for members, and details of membership. It also includes an index to all past volumes of Transactions, a yearly publication featuring scholarly articles and an in-depth casework analysis. A very good links page features a plethora of other heritage-related sites. [GAS, 4 Jun 2007].

06/10

The Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) is a registered charity that helps to repair and give new life to historic buildings of every kind throughout the United Kingdom. Since 1976, it has loaned over £30m to about 400 projects, and helped many others with grants and advice. The AHF website has been much improved recently, and is clearly laid out with a number of useful sections, including tips about rescuing a building, information about grants and loans, and coverage of the AHF's work in promoting regeneration. There is also a useful set of case studies (with information available to download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format), an up-to-date news section and a helpful page of links to other organisations involved in the conservation and rescue of historic buildings. The greatly increased number of illustrations is also a welcome addition, adding richness to the site. [GAS, 24 Aug 2006].

05/10

The Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland is concerned with the protection, preservation, study and appreciation of Scottish buildings, and has its origins in a group formed in 1956 to respond to the threatened demolition of Edinburgh's George Square. The site includes an up-to-date events listing; reviews of previous events; details of publications; and a helpful casework section, organised by region. There is also a worthwhile page of Scottish and heritage-related links. The site itself is attractive and neatly laid out, but it is a pity that (with the exception of the front page) there are no images of the numerous buildings AHSS is working to safeguard. Site awarded a Sapling Commendation
This well-organised and attractive site is the home of the Birmingham Conservation Trust - the charity behind the restoration of the famous Back to Backs as well as a number of other building conservation and regeneration projects in Birmingham. As well as background about the aims and work of the Trust, the site offers impressive illustrated coverage of current and completed projects, including Perrotts Folly, Newman Brothers coffin fittings factory, and Evans & Sons manufacturing premises in the Jewellery Quarter. Photographs are copious and well chosen, and are accompanied by detailed and interesting accounts of the buildings' history and restoration. A useful links page features other sites relevant to heritage in Birmingham and the UK. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 27 Oct 2006].

Founded in 1944, the CBA is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. Through the CBA's Council, eleven English regional branches, CBA Wales/Cymru, the Council for Scottish Archaeology and a small permanent staff team, the CBA works throughout the UK to involve people in archaeology, and to promote the appreciation and care of the historic environment for the benefit of present and future generations. The layout of the CBA site is a little complex, and lacks a consistent interface. Nevertheless, it is packed with useful material, including news and events, details of publications, links, and access to the CBA magazine British Archaeology. [GAS, 30 Apr 2006].

The Friends were founded in 1957 to save disused churches and chapels from demolition, decay and unsympathetic conversion, for public access and the benefit of the nation. The organisation now own 38 such buildings, half in England and half in Wales. Benefiting from a clean and elegant interface, the website gives a broad background to the work of the Friends in England and Wales, including an extensive early history and details of up and coming events. Primarily, however, the site gives details of the churches that the Friends own, each with its own page including a short history and photographs. A worthwhile links page also features. Thumbnail image of http://www.heritagelink.org.uk/ Heritage Link

http://www.heritagelink.org.uk/

06/10

Heritage Link is an umbrella organisation that was set up in 2002 by national heritage groups to promote the central role of the voluntary movement in the sector. Currently it has 81 members - representing everything from archaeology to agriculture, transport to historic houses and gardens - and continues to grow.
It provides "a forum for members to formulate and promote policy on core issues, make their voices heard collectively and coherently, and stay connected with a regularly updated support and information network". The site has a simple if slightly text-heavy layout, featuring the latest research, consultation responses and presentations to Government, from both Heritage Link members and their allies from the wider sector. Information and invitations to Heritage Link events are circulated via the free e-bulletin Update, sent to a mailing list of approximately 7,000 twice a month, and archive versions are published on the website after circulation. Sapling Site of the Month (also awarded a Sapling Commendation)
The Landmark Trust is an independent UK building preservation charity which was founded in 1965 to rescue worthwhile historic buildings from neglect, and then to restore and let them for holidays. The income from letting contributes to their upkeep. The site has information about the Trust and its Handbook (with sample pages online), plus a section about how individuals can help the Trust in its work, and a special feature on Lundy Island. There is a particularly interesting section covering 'Future Landmarks', looking at restoration projects that are currently underway or awaiting funding. It is perhaps surprising that the site lacks a full listing of the Trust's wonderful portfolio of properties, presumably to maximise purchases of the hard-copy Handbook. Quibble aside, however, this is an elegant and engaging site, with some excellent images. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 15 Sep 2006].

Site awarded a Sapling Commendation
Founded in 1895 by three Victorian philanthropists - Miss Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley - the National Trust now cares for over 248,000 hectares of countryside in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, plus almost 600 miles of coastline and more than 200 buildings and gardens of outstanding interest and importance. The Trust's website is vast - as well as details of all properties open to the public, there are sections covering (among other things) environment and conservation, holidays and travel, learning and discovery, policy and campaigns (with downloadable documents), and membership. The site also includes an excellent section of related links. The design of the site is attractive and logical, and a complete large text version is available for visually impaired users. Formerly known as the Phoenix Trust, the purpose of The Prince's Regeneration Trust is "to repair and find new uses for major historic buildings which are in danger of falling into decay or facing demolition, for the benefit of the communities in which they stand, and the public at large". The Trust's site is simple and elegant, featuring background about the organisation and its projects, as well as coverage of the 'Regeneration Through Heritage' initiative and an impressive (if slightly out of date) series of best practice studies. Site awarded a Sapling Commendation
SAVE was established in 1975 - European Architectural Heritage Year - by a group of journalists, historians, architects and planners to campaign publicly for endangered historic buildings through press releases, leaflets, reports, books and exhibitions. This website is very good - slightly ad hoc in its layout, but packed with plenty of useful information such as news, publications and links. Founded as the European arm of SAVE Britain's Heritage, the key aim of SAVE Europe's Heritage is "to draw public attention to endangered historic buildings and places [in Europe] in the belief that publicity is an essential means of prompting action and of finding people keen and able to save these buildings from their plight". The site includes details of SAVE Europe's Heritage publications, an articles section, and some good quality photographs of 'Buildings in Peril'. Based in the UK, SPAB was founded by William Morris in 1877 to counteract what it describes as "the highly destructive 'restoration' of medieval buildings being practised by many Victorian architects. Today it is the largest, oldest and most technically expert national pressure group fighting to save old buildings from decay, demolition and damage". The site offers features including an up-to-date events calendar, an education section covering courses and awards, and a useful 'publications and advice' area. Naturally, the site also includes the text of the famous SPAB Manifesto - written by William Morris and other founder members in 1877 - and which remains the philosophical basis for the Society's work.
