http://www.apti.org/

07/10

According to the site, "the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) is the premier cross-disciplinary organisation dedicated to promoting the best technology for conserving historic structures and their settings. US-based but with members in more than thirty countries, APT connects a network of architects, conservators, tradespeople, consultants, planners, curators, landscape architects, engineers, developers, educators, engineers, historians, apprentices and students". The site contains the information you would expect, including up-to-date details of publications, conferences, membership and local Chapters (branches), plus a useful 'Resources' section with reports, archives and a page of (mainly US and Canada-related) preservation links. Meanwhile, the appearance and legibility of the site is vastly improved following a recent redesign. [GAS, 24 Aug 2006].

http://www.gardenstrusts.org.uk/

04/10

The Association of Gardens Trusts is a UK national organisation representing the growing number of County Gardens Trusts that are actively engaged in conserving, researching, documenting and caring for the country's heritage of parks, gardens and designed landscapes. The site is a comprehensive resource, with sections covering (among other things) community activities, education, useful publications, and details of County Gardens Trusts. There is also an up-to-date events listing, and a helpful section of links to related organisations. However, a more consistent interface would improve the site's navigation and legibility - at the moment almost every page uses a different format. [GAS, 7 Nov 2006].

The United Kingdom Association of Preservation Trusts (APT) exists to promote the preservation of historic buildings by encouraging and supporting the work of building preservation trusts (BPTs). Now with its own dedicated URL, the site currently consists only of a few pages introducing APT's activities and 2006 national conference. Further content is promised, however, and it's good to see the APT site being maintained again after several years of dormancy. [GAS, 14 Oct 2006].

http://www.historic-towns.org/

05/10

The European Association of Historic Towns and Regions was formally established at a conference held in the Council of Europe, Strasbourg, in 1999. Hosted at Norwich City Council, it is a network of Historic Towns Associations drawing membership from the countries within the Council of Europe - up to 41 countries. Individual towns or regions can also join as 'associate members'. According to its site, the purpose of the organisation "is to promote the interests of Europe's historic towns - seeking to ensure that policy making bodies recognise and reflect the specific needs of historic towns and their inhabitants and raising public awareness about the importance and value of Europe's cultural heritage". As well as background about the Association, the site includes information about member towns, useful publications to download, and a page of links, as well as material relating to specific themes such as conservation, culture and town centres. The design of the site is much improved of late, with a clean and intuitive interface. [GAS, 14 Oct 2006].

The HHA "assists private owners to maintain Britain's historic houses and gardens for the benefit of the nation and for future generations". This attractively designed site is packed with useful information, including sections for Members and Friends of the HHA, up-to-date news and events, details of recent publications, a directory of properties to visit, and a worthwhile collection of related links. Thumbnail image of http://www.instituteofconservation.org.uk/ The Institute of Conservation

http://www.instituteofconservation.org.uk/

06/10

The Institute of Conservation is a body formed by five conservation organisations (Care of Collections Forum, Institute of Paper Conservation, Photographic Materials Conservation Group, Scottish Society for Conservation and Restoration, and United Kingdom Institute for Conservation) "pooling their resources and expertise to provide a service for the public, our cultural heritage and the members". The Institute's site is well-organised, and shaping up to be a comprehensive and good quality resource. As well as the obligatory 'About us' section, it includes useful conservation profiles of the UK nations and regions, a small page of links, coverage of policy and publications, and a range of dedicated content for members. The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) is the professional institute which represents conservation professionals in the public and private sectors in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and existing "to establish the highest standards of conservation practice to support the effective protection and enhancement of the historic environment". The overall look of the site is quite attactive, including the information you would expect about the Institute itself, such as membership, officers, branches and events. Other useful features include IHBC guidance notes, a discussion forum, and a helpful page of links. [GAS, 22 Aug 2005].

Thumbnail image of http://www.ukic.org.uk/ United Kingdom Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (UKIC)

http://www.ukic.org.uk/

06/10

UKIC is the professional body representing those who care for the country's cultural objects and heritage collections. According to the site, "its members are conservators working in public institutions such as museums and galleries, and conservators and restorers working in the private sector". Members of the Institute normally belong to one or more of its twelve specialist sections - Archaeology, Ceramics and Glass, Ethnography, Furniture and Wood, Gilding and Decorative Surfaces, Historic Interiors, Metals, Paintings, Photographic Materials, Stained Glass, Stone and Wall Paintings, or Textiles - and the organisation of the website reflects these various specialisms. The site also features up-to-date news (including the forthcoming 'convergence' with other conservation organisations to form a new 'Institute of Conservation'), details about membership and publications, and a 'members only' area. A simple but effective site. [GAS, 24 Aug 2005].
