Projects and Developments

Brandon Heritage Project
 http://www.brandon-heritage.co.uk/

The Brandon Heritage Project is ongoing, its author aiming to record the Suffolk town's history. The site lists historical information of the schools, churches, streets, houses and parks, particularly from the nineteenth century onwards. Many references are taken from Kelly's Suffolk Directory, but the author does welcome "holiday snaps, family photos, family trees, newspaper clippings, anecdotes and reminiscences", which in time will no doubt add to the site's interest. Already, the site is packed with photos, and is easy to navigate. There are other websites on Brandon, but this is by far the best and can only improve. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. Grainger Town Project
 http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/grainger/

Grainger Town is the name given to the historic heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, based around classical streets built by Richard Grainger in the 1830's and 1840's. 40% of buildings in the area are listed as being of historical and architectural importance. As the site describes, "in the 1980s and early 1990s, this once prosperous area of the city was overtaken by new centres of retail and commercial activity which eroded the economic base and left properties to fall into disrepair... the Grainger Town Project was established in 1997 in partnership with Newcastle City Council, English Partnerships and English Heritage with the aim of reversing this trend". Although the project itself ended in March 2003, the regeneration work continues under the auspices of Newcastle City Council's City Centre team. The site provides an interesting record of the project's achievements, under the headings of arts, business, jobs, property, heritage, environment and partnership, and there is a comprehensive news archive covering 2000-2003.
