This Italian-language site describes itself as "a portal concerning theory and solutions for monumental and archeological restoration", and it has some useful content, including papers and bibliographies. However, the proliferation of tacky banners really detracts from the overall impression. [GAS, 19 Jun 2006].

http://www.cambridge2000.com/cambridge2000/

09/10

Sapling Site of the Month (also awarded a Sapling Commendation)
The Cambridge 2000 project features over 1,300 photographs taken in Cambridge, England - mainly in the year 2000, but with photographs of newer buildings, and some other buildings that were missed, added after 2000. According to the site, "the photos are mainly of buildings of some interest or representative of a certain style of architecture". While the site's appearance may at first seem slightly rudimentary, the simplicity of its navigation is entirely appropriate for a site of this kind. Users can browse photographs by category, date of construction, architect or builder, date photographed, or by using the excellent interactive location map. Alternatively, it is possible to list all photos by name or date, or to view specific lists covering 100 notable buildings, sites for tourists, most important architects, modernist houses and - perhaps most poignantly - buildings destroyed since 2000. The quality of the photographs is uniformly very good, with each entry including helpful annotation, a location map, and links to photographs of nearby buildings. Providing a fascinating snapshot of 21st century Cambridge, the Cambridge 2000 site is truly an inspirational resource - tantalisingly, however, the site gives no indication of the obviously modest person who created it. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 1 Jan 2006].

Thumbnail image of http://www.dicamillocompanion.com/ The DiCamillo Companion to British & Irish Country Houses

http://www.dicamillocompanion.com/

10/10

Sapling Site of the Month (also awarded a Sapling Commendation)
The DiCamillo Companion is ambitious in its scope, describing itself as "a database that will list every British and Irish country house, standing or demolished". Amazingly, the site delivers - updated daily, its Database of Houses claims to contain records for more than 7,000 houses, with images for over 1,160 houses, and listings of over 230 houses where movie and TV filming has taken place; moreover, it is all the work of just one person, architectural historian Curt DiCamillo. A powerful search tool allows users to find the information they require, with each record featuring details (where available) about the architects, current condition, access, ownership, history and other references. The DiCamillo Companion also offers many features in addition to its Database of Houses. Highlights include a useful pronunciation guide to house names; access to Burke's Peerage & Gentry search; and an excellent section of more than 300 links to country house and related websites. The site itself is well-organised, and the effective use of colours, images and quotes gives it a classy, country house-inspired feel. Conversely, while the sheer number of graphics and extensive use of Java can make it a little slow to navigate, it seems a price worth paying in order to access its splendid content. Be in do doubt, the DiCamillo Companion is an incredible achievement, and an essential site for anyone interested in heritage. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 12 Nov 2007].

This up-to-date website contains information for those interested in the deterioration processes in cultural heritage objects caused by the indoor environment, especially air pollutants. Concerned with the impact of air quality on objects in museums, libraries, or archives, the site includes papers and technical notes; literature reference lists; conference and meeting reports with abstracts; a comprehensive list of related links; and a useful image gallery illustrating the effect of indoor air pollution on materials. Thumbnail image of http://www.losttrails.com/ Lost Trails

http://www.losttrails.com/

06/10

Lost Trails is an educational multi-media website centred around the Herodotus Project. The Herodotus Project is a free serialised new translation of the Greek historian Herodotus along with extensive photography of the locations and artifacts mentioned in the book, enabling students to "explore the text visually while reading it". The project is described as "a multi-year effort only realisable on the Internet", and aims to eventually have as complete a pictorial record as possible of the sites mentioned by Herodotus. The eclectic layout of the site makes it a site to explore rather than browse methodically, but it is well illustrated, informative and certainly enjoyable. A newly translated text and a photographic essay of a site mentioned by Herodotus is added each month, while a message board - amusingly titled Lost Mails - is quite well used. [GAS, 1 Jun 2006].

Thumbnail image of http://www.buildinghistory.org/ Researching Historic Buildings in the British Isles

http://www.buildinghistory.org/

09/10

Sapling Site of the Month (also awarded a Sapling Commendation)
In this impressive site - now hosted at its own dedicated domain - Jean Manco explains how to track down the history of buildings in the UK and Ireland. Her extensive guide covers too much ground to read in one gulp, so it helps that navigation is easy. Visitors can plunge in via type of building or type of source, such as images, maps and deeds, or make a beeline instead for the dictionaries of architects or regional gazetteers. The site also provides help with dating the fabric, identifying the style, and setting the building in the context of the manor, village or town. There are numerous bibliographies and links to archives, plus an online sample of primary sources, covering historic images and books such as Old Inns of London. Packed with illustrations and links throughout, and with a neat and simple interface, Researching Historic Buildings in the British Isles really is an outstanding resource. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 12 Nov 2007].

Thumbnail image of http://www.scran.ac.uk/ SCRAN - Multimedia Resources On History And Culture

http://www.scran.ac.uk/

07/10

Sapling Site of the Month (also awarded a Sapling Commendation)
SCRAN describes itself as "the history and culture site which lets you learn directly by accessing images, movies, sounds and virtual reality". The site offers instant access to images, sounds, movies and learning resources about Scotland, and contains over 330,000 images from museums, galleries and archives. Access was originally free, but is now restricted to subscribers only - however, many institutions already subscribe to SCRAN (access is via an Athens username and password), and home subscriptions are offered at a realistic price. Overall, SCRAN is attractively designed, easy to use, prolifically illustrated, and a very useful and innovative resource. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 20 Jun 2006].

Thumbnail image of http://www.sevenwondersworld.com/ Seven Wonders of the World - Ancient Times

http://www.sevenwondersworld.com/

04/10

Seven Wonders of the World does exactly what it says on the tin, offering information about the location and history of the Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus, Colossus of Rhodes, Temple Of Artemis, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and Lighthouse of Alexandria. Additional pages offer information on related individuals and places, such as Hammurabi and King Khufu, and provide coverage of more modern 'wonders' such as the Eiffel Tower and Taj Mahal. The design of the site is neat and tidy, and its content is informative, with the cross-linking between entries particularly effective; however, the absence of any images is a little disappointing - the addition of artists' impressions or photographs would really help enliven the site. http://www.p.lodz.pl/I35/personal/jw37/sheds/trainsheds.html

06/10

This billingual site (in English and Polish) is a well-designed and nicely illustrated site on railway architecture, focussing on the evolution of trainshed design (a trainshed being defined here as "any building structure that contains tracks and platforms (or alighting area) and is covered by a roof - not a ceiling". The site includes maps showing the location of trainsheds across Europe, a small section of links, and a gallery with useful accompanying text. [GAS, 3 Jun 2006].

08/10

Sapling Site of the Month (also awarded a Sapling Commendation)
Based at the University of Dundee's School of Town and Regional Planning, the Glossary describes itself as "an attempt to impart some of the range, complexity, and enormous interest and satisfaction that can be found in conservation work, going beyond a simple catalogue of terms". This is an impressively comprehensive resource - there are eighty entries under the letter 'A' alone, for example - and a must for anyone interested in urban conservation. Many entries are illustrated (using some excellent photographs), and cross-referenced to other entries using hyperlinks. A splendid website, deservedly awarded a Sapling Commendation.
