Landscape at the University of Sheffield
 http://www.shef.ac.uk/landscape/

This site sports a very attractive and modern design, and is easy to get around. It includes an introduction to the landscape profession; information about courses, research and staff; a news and events page (though not functioning at the time of Sapling's visit); and an excellent gallery featuring examples of student work. The 'information for students' section also includes a worthwhile page of landscape-related links. [GAS, 4 Oct 2005].

Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design
 http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/as/ald/

Based at Leeds Metropolitan University, the Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design has over 900 students studying full and part time with an academic and support staff of nearly 50. Originating as part of the Government School of Design in the 1850s, the School describes itself as "proud of this long tradition of creative endeavour"; today, it "builds on traditional practice and embraces new media and technologies". The site provides a basic introduction to the School, with some interesting news stories, and profiles of former students. Much of the useful content is hosted elsewhere, however, with links to dedicated sites for each of the School's subject areas (including Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Garden Art and Design, Environmental Design, Design, and Design Culture), while the School's research is also covered on a separate site. http://www.landscape.mmu.ac.uk/

The Landscape Architecture programme at MMU seeks to offer students "an unrivalled opportunity to experience the teaching of landscape architecture within an art and design faculty, with its emphasis on creativity and transferable design skills". The site is neatly organised and attractively illustrated, with information about courses, research and the department's resources; staff profiles; reasonably up-to-date news and events; and examples of students' work. http://www.biad.uce.ac.uk/

Describing itself as "one of the foremost centres for art, design and media education", BIAD offers a wide portfolio of courses including architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and fine art. With a refreshingly modern design that avoids the dull university prospectus look, the BIAD site provides full coverage of the Institute's courses and research, via a series of subsites. University of Gloucestershire - Department of Natural and Social Sciences
 --NEW URL-- http://www.glos.ac.uk/faculties/ehs/sciences/

Formed by the merger of the Schools of Environment and Social Sciences, the University of Gloucestershire Department of Natural and Social Sciences "delivers a diverse range of study programmes in the areas of biology, community development, environmental science, geography, heritage management, landscape and garden design, psychology and sociology". Integrated visually and physically within the overall University site, the Department's pages do look and read rather like a prospectus, with the comprehensive staff profiles and up-to-date news section adding a much-needed richness. However, for a university department, the absence of a research section is unusual. [GAS, 10 May 2006].

As well as information about undergraduate and postgraduate study opportunities, the site features up-to-date news, coverage of research (with links to research centres), and details of staff and facilities. http://www.apl.ncl.ac.uk/

The Newcastle School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (APL) brings together the previous Departments of Architecture and Town and Country Planning, and seeks "to build on its teaching and research excellence in developing an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to researching and teaching all aspects of architecture, planning, urban design, digital architecture, urban conservation and landscape architecture". University of Texas at Austin - School of Architecture
 http://wnt.utexas.edu/architecture/

This redesigned site offers information on academic programmes at the UT-Austin School of Architecture - as well as architecture, these include historic preservation, sustainable design, architectural history, urban design, community and regional planning, interior design and landscape architecture. Other sections provide information about staff, events, resources, and a useful research and publications section, featuring the online journal Planning Forum. The design of the site is reasonably attractive, though many of the deeper pages are inconsistent in their format; furthermore, the frequent use of images as internal links (with no text alternatives) is poor in terms of accessibility. University of Toronto: Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design
 http://www.ald.utoronto.ca/

According to the site's welcome page, the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design "offers rigorous programmes of study for the emerging architect, landscape architect or urban designer". The site has been completely redesigned using Flash, and looks, well, very flash... however, beneath the gloss there is a lot of good content here. The site is clearly organised, and has all the information you would expect about admissions, courses, programmes, events, together with a resources section and an impressive gallery of student work. The Flash - though attractively used - can slow things down though, and on a slower connection the constant 'loading' messages do begin to annoy. As always, an HTML alternative would be a worthwhile addition. [GAS, 24 Aug 2006].
