Regional and Devolved Government

Manitobawildlands.org
 http://www.manitobawildlands.org/

According to the site, its purpose is to "support the public policy goal of protected areas establishment in Manitoba [Canada]... our aim is to provide information about public processes that affect: Manitoba land and waters; decisions for use of crown (public) lands and water; technical information about these lands decisions and processes". The site is certainly a comprehensive resource - sections cover Protected Areas, Economic Development, Consultations/Legislation, Land Use Planning, Climate Change, Our Earth and Governments, often featuring what the site calls "hard to find government information, or documents that are no longer posted". Manitobawildlands.org also includes an up-to-date events listing, a 'Take Action Centre' for sending letters to decisionmakers, and an excellent page of links related to the site's themes. Visually, the site has few bells and whistles, but its content makes it a valuable and well-maintained resource. [GAS, 12 Sep 2005].

Scottish Natural Heritage
 http://www.snh.org.uk/

As its name suggests, Scottish Natural Heritage "works with Scotland's people to care for its natural heritage... promoting its care and improvement, its responsible enjoyment, its greater understanding and appreciation and its sustainable use, now and for future generations." SNH's website is quite attractively designed, and offers vast amounts of useful information, including coverage of news and events, policy and guidance documents, and publications, data and research. On the downside, the layout of the site is less intuitive than it used to be, with the rationale for having two separate horizontal menus not entirely clear. Equally, the loss of what used to be a very good links section is disappointing. Overall, however, this remains a valuable and enjoyable site. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 4 Jul 2010].
