The Ground Trades Xchange

Focused on the US, the Ground Trades Xchange is "a landscape community message board where people in the industry (arborists, hardscapers, softscapers, educators, landscape architects and designers) discuss various topics pertaining to the industry, including business operations, installation techniques, upcoming legislation or anything else that is on the minds of people in the industry". The numerous forums are certainly very well-used, while a 'Suggested Reading' section features books recommended by the site's readers. An impressive resource. [GAS, 1 Jun 2006].

 Irishgardeners.com aims to offer "free access to an incredible wealth of horticultural information specific to Ireland", seeking to provide a versatile forum where users can discuss all the best gardening techniques and get help from fellow gardeners. The site is logically organised into a series of topics, covering issues such as pests and diseases, plant identification, cultivation information, where to buy plants, garden visiting, recipes and jobs. It's a great idea, nicely executed within a clean and intuitive interface. With already over 100 registered users since the site's launch two months ago, the Irish Gardeners Forum looks set to be a popular and useful resource. Awarded a Sapling Commendation.  US-based LawnCafe describes itself as "the green industry's best landscape forum site on the web", where users can "connect with other landscape professionals, contractors, lawn maintenance, hardscaping professionals, all other professionals in the green industry". It is certainly a well used site - when Sapling visited, it claimed to have over 5,000 members, 13,000 threads and 150,000 posts. As well as lawns, other threads cover topics including fertilisers and pesticides, landscaping, trees, irrigation and hardscaping. With an attractive and intuitive interface, LawnCafe is without a doubt an excellent resource in its field. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Mar 2006].

Described as "an online tribute to [its founder] Eric ELM", LawnForums.com is "a lawn care and landscape message board community dedicated to assist small lawn care businesses succeed through exchange of information". The board is certainly extensively used, with many thousands of postings - specific forums cover commercial lawn and business issues, landscaping, pesticides and fertilisers, with separate picture forums covering lawns and equipment.  LawnTimes.com provides forums for lawn care and landscaping business owners and homeowners to discuss issues, techniques and tools. Topics include discussions on the value of different types of equipment, as well as ideas and plans for installation and maintenance. In addition, the site also includes informational videos, product and procedural reviews by experienced professionals, chat, access to radio stations, and off-topic dialogue. The forums are certainly well used - there are more than 2,000 members, and 18,000 posts in the 'Commercial and Residential Lawn Care' forum alone - and offer a very useful resource for anyone working within the field.
