The site includes an excellent collection of essential articles by leading experts; a products and services directory, listing suppliers of products, specialist consultants, specialist contractors and craftsmen, as well as advisory bodies and organisations; a building conservation bookshop, conveniently organised by subject; and up-to-date coverage of events and courses. Benefiting from a recent refresh of its design, the site is reasonably well-organised and logical to navigate. Dexigner Design Portal

Dexigner is set-up as a large portal for the design industry, featuring databases, news, events, designers, design companies and feeds, and including design topics from 3D to floral to lighting to transport. At the moment some section are sparse, but Dexigner could develop into a comprehensive design resource. Supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Earthwire UK is an environmental portal providing a free daily overview of environmental news from the United Kingdom, drawing from national, regional and local media sources. Earthwire also includes press releases and news from research organisations, the public sector, and environmental organisations, with a readership ranging from government officials and journalists to students, researchers and anyone else interested in current events and the environment. Coverage of environmental issues in the UK is split across regions or alternatively via topics, with heading including Agriculture, Biodiversity, Business and Industry, Climate and Atmosphere, Coastal and Marine Issues, Energy, Environmental Impacts, Extreme Weather Events, Forests and Woodlands, Freshwater, Pollution, Public Policy, Transport, Urban Areas and Waste. ELAN - European Landscape Architecture Network

ELAN was set up in 1995 by a group of former landscape architecture students involved with ELASA (European Landscape Architecture Students Association), to carry forward the spirit of co-operation they had experienced beyond the student world. The site's content is neatly and attractively presented, but has unfortunately not been updated since July 2005. It therefore still features details of the "forthcoming" ELAN 2005 meeting in Croatia are provided, plus information on the ELAN-L mailing list, described as "an opportunity to share ideas, ask questions and provide information, on any topics related to European landscape architecture". The design of the website is elegant and attractive, with information well laid out and easy to find. Covering the US, the Landscape Architects Network is a service designed to help customers "find experienced, licensed landscape architects". However, rather than being an online directory as its name might suggest, users submit their contact information and requirements, which the Network then passes on to "one landscape architect in your area". While this is a useful service, it does mean that the site itself has little content. However, its 'basic guide to landscape architecture services' and 'questions to ask a landscape architect' do provide a helpful introduction to the profession. [GAS, 14 Aug 2005].

Laprofession.org - Landscape Architecture

Laprofession.org is an excellent, well-designed site with a great deal of helpful information about landscape architecture. Highlights include the Practice section, with an impressive and well-illustrated projects archive; the Education section, with details about becoming a landscape architect; and the Schools section, with a comprehensive listing of landscape schools in the US and worldwide. There is also a helpful links section, featuring organisations, news and publications. The main drawback is that the site is designed using Flash, which can slow things down a bit, and means that an up-to-date browser is essential. Though its appearance is rather rudimentary and text heave, the LIH is nonetheless a useful resource, with lots of information, including booklists, teaching materials and links. Stellasyard.com

Stellasyard.com is a new site dedicated to "landscaping and gardening design ideas, advice and inspiration", with content including free design plans, featured products, coverage of 'guest gardens', recipes and links. Meanwhile, an excellent series of articles written by the site's author, John Conti, give Stellasyard.com real value as a resource. The site is well illustrated and benefits from a consistent appearance throughout, though the purple and green interface may not be to everyone's liking. The over-prominent Google ads might also benefit from some reworking - it seems a shame that adverts should dominate each page rather than the site's undoubtedly useful content. Overall, however, Stellasyard.com is an enjoyable and interesting place to visit that can only improve further over time. [GAS, 15 Sep 2006].

Tree Hugger

Tree Hugger is a web magazine, covering anything that has a modern aesthetic yet is environmentally responsible. The site boasts a large readership who check out the latest news, reviews and recommendations for modern yet green products and services, and who use its directory to help facilitate their buying processes. Tree Hugger is well written and despite the name does not preach at you, but seeks to inform. Coverage is vast, with headings covering accessories, 'almosts', alternative energy, architecture, audio/video, aviation, bathroom, bedroom, bikes, biopolymer, books, botanical, cars and celebrities, through to solar, sports and technology. In addition, there is also a link to Hugg (http://www.hugg.com/) a sister site and green news story harvester. Here, "all posts start out in the queue. Each time a story is Hugged, it climbs the ranks. If a story gets enough Huggs, it jumps up to the front page where it can be seen by everyone who visits". There is also Tree Hugger TV (http://www.treehuggertv.com/), again a sister site, which offers a video version of the web magazine, featuring material produced by anyone who shares Tree Hugger's passions and can operate a video camera.
