Conservation Award shortlist revealed

The Crown Estate has announced the shortlist for The Crown Estate Conservation Award 2006, part of the RIBA special awards.
Carrying a prize of £5000, The Crown Estate Conservation Award is made to the architects of the best work of conservation that demonstrates successful restoration and/or adaptation of an architecturally significant building.
The shortlist is selected from the best conservation schemes to have won RIBA Awards in that year. The prize, the most prestigious in conversation architecture, was established in 1998 and The Crown Estate has sponsored it since then.
Last year the award was won by Avanti Architects for the conservation for the Grade I listed Isokon (Lawn Road) apartments in London NW3. This long neglected icon of the British Modern Movement was saved with an outstanding example of creative conservation securing a sustainable future for this iconic building.
Tony Chapman, Head of Awards at RIBA, told Sapling.info:
"A thorough understanding of a building and its history, informing patient and authentic use of traditional construction and craftsmanship, will always be the bedrock of thoughtful conservation. The self-confidence of British architects working in this way demonstrates that they are amongst the best in Europe."
Roger Bright, Chief Executive of The Crown Estate said:
"The Crown Estate has a long and proud history of balancing business needs with good management and conservation of some of the nation's most historic buildings. We are therefore delighted to be sponsoring The Crown Estate Conservation Award once again.
"This year the Award has attracted a high standard of entries, all of which are excellent examples of conservation work."
The shortlisted projects are:
Christ Church, Spitalfields, London
Harbour Meadow, Court Barn Lane, Birdham, West Sussex
Pinions Barn, Grange Farm, Higham Cross, Buckinghamshire
The Egg, Theatre Royal Bath, Bath
The National Gallery East Wing & Central Portico, London
The winner will be announced on 28 September at www.thecrownestate.co.uk and www.architecture.com, with the prize being presented at the Stirling Prize Dinner on 14 October.
