Hello Graham,
I remember visiting the odeon as a cinema, and also as a venue not to long ago that held a rather large scale audition for a television company. I have lovely memories of this building, but I have to admit I don't want them to stay as memories - I'd rather they were realities.
Inside it was clean, warm, extremely spacious, the cloakrooms and washroom facilities were also large spacious and clean. The fittings in the cinema were in good condition. However, I did also think that a small amount of investment to render the building more apt for disabled or alternatively abled would have been appropriate, but this is the situation for the majority of public buildings. I have enjoyed myself in the odeon as I'm sure the majority of its users have.
But memories, are not sufficient to keeping a building open or from being demolished. What I believe is sufficient is the alternative to, this crazy attitude that the local authority has taken in not spending a fraction of money to keep it from being demolished, whilst more costly ventures to build and maintain are being erected throughout the city as office blocks empty of tenants.
Therefore, I have a proposal is it possible that the odeon cinema could be re designated several other uses for the benefit of the residents of Newcastles growing number of artists, thespians, musicians singers etc - as a venue for amateur theatre groups, musical societies, art exhibitors. Private funding could also be raised via the commercial use of some its space. I would be most interested to hear from you in relation to this. For at least the overall objective should be to at least draw even, who knows with a bit of luck maybe it could even make a profit. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you
Yours truly
