I find this campaign to save the old Odeon cinema on Pilgrim Street shocking. The building is currently an obsolute eye sore, and trying to save it is just making that end of the city centre look an obsolute bomb site for an even longer amount of time. I fully understand how beautiful parts of Newcastle city centre are, (Grey St for example) but this old ugly building does not fit into that category at all. What exactly do you want the building for? There simply isnt a market for another cinema in Tyneside- The new Odeon is chocker, the Warner cinema closed due to lack of business, the Tyneside cinema covers the end of arty/ unusual pictures and there are another two cinemas close by (Silverlink and Metro Centre).
I understand that Chelsfield wants to develop the whole end of Pilgrim St to expand the core shopping area south from Northumberland St- surely the vast vast majority in Newcastle would prefer that than an ugly cinema sitting there rotting.
