The Odeon is a place of many fond memories for me and as a 26 year old i may not go that far back compared to the letter writers of the Chronicle letters page, i still returned to the Odeon as i could not stand soulless Multiplexes! I think the ideal way to keep the old Odeon site is to change it into a music venue as so many other cinema's have in the past. The likes of the Who and Pink Floyd have played at the Odeon so what better than to create enough space for a standing venue complete with large stage? perhaps space could be provided for the dances held until recently at the Mayfair which was demolished to make way for the new Odeon(perhaps a nice tie in to save the Odeon's face at the bad feeling created when the Mayfair went?)There is a serious lack of venue for music to be played in Newcastle since the demise of the Mayfair, the city hall is seated and the Arena has nothing to offer as its lifeless, there is the centre for art and music in Gateshead but there is a need for venues for several bands who bypass Newcastle because of lack of adequate venues. Because of the Odeons siting its a great place to go to still because of metro and bus links and would make an ideal venue for music and also dancing. I've mentioned the Odeon as a music venue to a few people of my own age an they think it is worth at least putting forward but there needs to be a lot of support for an idea like this, although i probably think the future of the Odeon building has already been settled it would be a shame to see it go!
