News, Information and Networks

The Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP)
 http://www.aesop-planning.com/

AESOP is a network of European universities and university departments that teach and conduct research within the field of urban and regional planning. According to the site, "the network exists to promote the development of the teaching curricula and research within the Member Schools through regular dialogue, exchange visits and the dissemination of research and best practice". The site includes full, up-to-date details about these activities and events, including the annual AESOP Congress. Other features include the AESOP Newsletter, a worthwhile links page and a useful downloads area. The design of the site is neat and tidy, though the rather small, pale text gives it a slightly washed-out look. [GAS, 4 Sep 2005].

According to its site, "the primary purpose of CEBE is to provide discipline based support for learning and teaching in the built environment subject communities of Architecture, Landscape, Urban Planning, Housing and Transport, Construction and Real Estate". Recently redesigned, CEBE's website is up-to-date and attractive, featuring news and events, subject and issue based materials for enhancing learning and teaching, projects and initiatives, and a useful publications section. Elsewhere, and excellent 'resources finder' provides a searchable directory of Internet sites for built environment academics, provided in association with the Resource Discovery Network. Global Planning Education Association Network (GPEAN)
 http://www.gpean.org/

GPEAN aims to "provide various urban planning organisations with opportunities for mutual communication and immediate report on the significant events of worldwide urban planning, discussing on the developing tide of planning theory, even further, improving the function of urban planning in public life, in order to build a city system which is sustainable and impelling". The site is a worthwhile resource, with links to its member organisations, and up-to-date news and events featured on the front page. Other parts of the site, accessed via the main menu, include up-to-date 'news from our associations' and a disappointing 'hotlinks' page with just two links. The design of the site is reasonable, though the black background gives it a rather funereal feel. [GAS, 23 Aug 2005].
