CAD applications such as AutoCAD, Microstation, SketchUp and Vectorworks have revolutionised the creation and evaluation of masterplan designs.
Technology is also revolutionising the ways that we can use, define, map, describe, evaluate and talk about 'social layers of place'. Free services such as Google Maps, Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth, together with online networking, have transformed the way that we understand cities.
Participants at this knowledge-sharing event will discuss the effect that computers and communication technologies have on people, space and place, and analyse the effects of computers in the design process.

Reforming transport governance in England’s sub-regions and city regions
 |
| Start date | |
20 May 2008 |
| End date | |
20 May 2008 |
| Place | |
Mayfair Conference Centre, London, United Kingdom |

| Description | |
The Local Transport Bill gives local and passenger transport authorities in England the power to create new governance structures for transport delivery across sub-regions and city regions. This includes the ability to set up integrated transport authorities. Many authorities are already reviewing their transport governance arrangements in anticipation of the powers being enacted. Ministers say they want to give authorities the flexibility to choose the new governance model that best suits their needs, so the precise powers granted to any area will be set out in secondary legislation. But these proposed changes throw up numerous questions...
This conference will provide a focus for discussion of these issues and offer an insight into the most appropriate way forward for local authorities across England. Delegates will learn more about the Government’s proposals and explore the latest thinking from some of the areas that have already started to produce firm recommendations for their new governance arrangements. |

| Description | |
This lecture will be presented by Tony Juniper, Director of Friends of the Earth.
Sustainability is a goal which most of us have now embraced, albeit somewhat superficially on occasion. But how do we balance the drive towards genuinely sustainable communities in the UK – and abroad – with the need to maintain local identity and traditions, to avoid global homogenisation, and to reconcile sustainable solutions and systems with regional character and customs?
This lecture examines how we can balance the dash for sustainability with rethinking the perceived demand for continuing technological ‘progress’ and, at the same time, with the maintenance and enhancement of our invaluable built heritage.

Urban design for neighbourhoods and mixed-use development
It is easy enough to colour in an area on a plan to indicate that it will be a neighbourhood or a mixed-use development. It is more difficult to design a place that will actually support mixed uses and neighbourhood life. The seminar and clinic focus on the practical lessons of best practice, and highlight the lessons of places where new neighbourhoods are coming to life. |
