Online Planning Resources
 http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/sbe/planbiblios/

This site has two main parts - the first featuring up-to-date and comprehensive A-Z listings of planning-related organisations and websites; and the second a set of comprehensive bibliographies, covering topics such as green issues in planning, sustainable urban travel, countryside planning and urban regeneration. The site has no visual frills, but doesn't really need any; it is well maintained by Hugh McClintock at the University of Nottingham's Institute of Urban Planning, and is designed primarily for students taking his modules. However, anyone else studying planning will almost certainly find it a valuable reference source. Due to Hugh McClintock's retirement in June 2006, the site is about to be incorporated into Rudi; hopefully it will reamin free to access in its new home. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. Parole
 http://parole.aporee.org/

Parole, a project of gruppo A12(I), Udo Noll (D) and Peter Scupelli (USA/I), describes itself as "a dynamic dictionary of the contemporary city... images, texts, quotations, comments, fragments of text, links to external websites, videos, sounds, webcams are some of the scattered elements which constitute its fragmented mosaic". The site features about 900 words, related to the transformation of the urban landscape, organised in a hypermedia database, as well as more than 1000 related links that can be searched or browsed. The colourful layout of the 'dictionary' entries is certainly unique, if not perhaps to everyone's taste; however, an alternative plain text interface does allow users to navigate the site in a more straightforward way. If you are prepared to look beyond parole's architectural pretension - including, of course, its aversion to using any capital letters - then you will find it a rich and enjoyable place to explore. Planning-applications.co.uk
 http://www.planning-applications.co.uk/

Described as "the online planning aid service", planning-applications.co.uk aims to provide independent professional guidance and advice on town planning and related issues, and contains a wealth of information. Sections cover key areas of interest, such as making a planning application, use classes, permitted development and development plans. Highlights include the useful glossary of planning terms and the excellent 'UK local plan monitor', with information about the current progress and status of plans throughout the UK, plus links to the relevant local authority websites. Importantly, the site's authorship - Ian P. Butter BSc FRICS is "a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors with over 25 years professional experience in the field of planning" - gives its content credibility. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Nov 2005].

Urbanwords: the website of The Dictionary of Urbanism
 http://www.urbanwords.info/

Published by Streetwise Press, The Dictionary of Urbanism is described as "a comprehensive and often irreverent reference for everyone whose business or passion is cities. It defines and explains almost every word or phrase that a councillor, developer, built environment professional, community activist or urban explorer is likely to hear or read". This website accompanying the book inevitably does its best to drum up sales with glowing reviews and details of where to buy it, but is also an interesting resource in its own right. Content includes a regularly updated supplement to the book featuring new dictionary entries, a browsable list of entries, selected quotations, details of how to contribute, and a useful list of references, while a very good links page flags up other urbanism and related sites. Virtual Reality Planning Applications
 http://www.planningapplication.com/

With the tagline "increasing community awareness through virtual reality", planningapplication.com is a service from Geomatic Engineering Limited (GEL) which provides planning applications in virtual reality for the public to view over the Internet. According to the site, "the virtual reality models are produced by converting standard AutoCAD drawings into Java with such a small file size that even users/browsers without broadband have access to local and national planning application concepts". The system relies on users selecting the relevant local planning authority from a dropdown menu, then entering the appropriate PA or GEL reference; where drawings are available, the site explains that the PA number can be displayed on the formal planning application notice along with the website address, thus allowing anyone interested to view the plans. Conversely, those wishing to feature their drawings on the site can request a quote using the form provided. While an innovative and worthy idea, it is difficult to judge from the site the extent to which it has been taken up; perhaps it would be useful if users could also browse applications by local authority, rather than having to look up a specific scheme?
