Charities and Campaigning

The Architectural Heritage Fund
 http://www.ahfund.org.uk/

The Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) is a registered charity that helps to repair and give new life to historic buildings of every kind throughout the United Kingdom. Since 1976, it has loaned over £30m to about 400 projects, and helped many others with grants and advice. The AHF website has been much improved recently, and is clearly laid out with a number of useful sections, including tips about rescuing a building, information about grants and loans, and coverage of the AHF's work in promoting regeneration. There is also a useful set of case studies (with information available to download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format), an up-to-date news section and a helpful page of links to other organisations involved in the conservation and rescue of historic buildings. The greatly increased number of illustrations is also a welcome addition, adding richness to the site. [GAS, 24 Aug 2006].

Changing Places
 http://www.changingplaces.org.uk/

Changing Places was a Groundwork project funded by the Millennium Commission, where "locally driven regeneration projects, involving residents and the wide range of partner organisations have been the key to the programme's success". 21 projects have helped local communities tackle the legacy of post-industrial decay in the UK, bringing over 1,000 hectares of derelict and neglected land back into use. This is an attractive and informative site, featuring research findings as well as full details about all the projects themselves. The site is no longer updated now that the project has ended, but it does provide a useful archive of what was achieved. [GAS, 1 Jun 2006].

The Civic Trust
 http://www.civictrust.org.uk/

The Civic Trust describes itself as "Britain's leading charity devoted to enhancing the quality of life in Britain's cities, towns and villages: the places where people live, work, shop and relax". This website is quite neatly designed and organised, if a little texty, but it does offers masses of useful information. Among the site's features are details of the annual Heritage Open Days and Civic Trust Awards; information about the work of the Civic Trust Regeneration Unit (CTRU); and a section for civic societies nationwide, with useful links to all those civic societies with their own websites. CL:AIRE - Contaminated Land: Applications in Real Environments
 http://www.claire.co.uk/

CL:AIRE describes itself as "providing a link between the main players in contaminated land remediation in the UK, to catalyse the development of cost-effective methods of investigating and remediating contaminated land in a sustainable way." The organisation is a public/private partnership involving government policy makers, regulators, industry, research organisations and technology developers. The site is full of information, with sections covering stakeholders, projects and news, plus an excellent links page. Elegantly designed, a recent redesign has removed the site's reliance on frames, vastly enhancing its overall appearance and usability. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 4 Jul 2006].

Joseph Rowntree Foundation
 http://www.jrf.org.uk/

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation is one of the largest social policy research and development charities in the UK. It spends about £7 million a year on a research and development programme that seeks to better understand the causes of social difficulties and explore ways of better overcoming them. The Foundation does not carry out the research in-house, but works in partnership with a large variety of academic and other institutions to achieve its aims. This is a comprehensive, nicely designed and regularly updated site with background information about the Foundation, press releases, details of current research priorities and project funding opportunities, a very good section of related links, and an online bookshop selling the Foundation's publications. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Jun 2006].

The Landmark Trust
 http://www.landmarktrust.co.uk/

The Landmark Trust is an independent UK building preservation charity which was founded in 1965 to rescue worthwhile historic buildings from neglect, and then to restore and let them for holidays. The income from letting contributes to their upkeep. The site has information about the Trust and its Handbook (with sample pages online), plus a section about how individuals can help the Trust in its work, and a special feature on Lundy Island. There is a particularly interesting section covering 'Future Landmarks', looking at restoration projects that are currently underway or awaiting funding. It is perhaps surprising that the site lacks a full listing of the Trust's wonderful portfolio of properties, presumably to maximise purchases of the hard-copy Handbook. Quibble aside, however, this is an elegant and engaging site, with some excellent images. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 15 Sep 2006].

The Prince's Regeneration Trust
 http://www.princes-regeneration.org/

Formerly known as the Phoenix Trust, the purpose of The Prince's Regeneration Trust is "to repair and find new uses for major historic buildings which are in danger of falling into decay or facing demolition, for the benefit of the communities in which they stand, and the public at large". The Trust's site is simple and elegant, featuring background about the organisation and its projects, as well as coverage of the 'Regeneration Through Heritage' initiative and an impressive (if slightly out of date) series of best practice studies. A very good links page offers thorough coverage of sites related to the Trust's interests. [GAS, 24 Jun 2006].
