A little left behind in the search stakes by Google and other competitors, AltaVista (now owned by Overture) has recently gone back to basics with its new, minimal homepage. The layout of the site, and the way that search results are displayed, is certainly much improved as a result. Inverclyde Views features good quality photographs from around the streets of Inverclyde, including the towns of Port Glasgow, Greenock and Gourock, and the villages of Kilmacolm, Inverkip and Wemyss Bay. Though interesting as a photographic record of these places, the site also serves an important function in highlighting the campaign for the Robert Street area of Port Glasgow, an area that the site's author believes has suffered from a "lack of funding over the last 15 to 20 years, leading to the decline of the buildings and surrounding area". In addition to the photographs and campaign background, the site creates extra value through the inclusion of extra features such as polls, links and visitor comments and suggestions for how the area's housing and place quality might be improved. The site - recently redesigned - features a resumé, and a portfolio of his work, including 3D images of university projects, drawings, animations and web design. Cultivate Interactive was a web magazine funded under the European Commission's Digital Heritage and Cultural Content (DIGICULT) programme, whose work was involved in "expanding the contribution of libraries, museums and archives to the emerging culture economy", but also intended as a discussion platform for the broader digital cultural community. Unfortunately, the magazine has reached the end of its programme and has "currently ceased activity"; however, users can still access back issues by browsing the site or using the advanced search facility.
