Newspaperindex.com is a simple but effective concept, providing a list of online newspapers in every country of the world. The site benefits from clear selection criteria, stating that "we collect and maintain links only to websites containing local, free and independent news from each country. You will not find links to sites that solely grab information and content from other sources, local or sport news. We only include websites with free public access that have a local editorial staff of independent journalists and in most cases a printed version as well. Another important thing is that we only accept news sites that are daily updated". If the site's intention is "not about collecting links [but] evaluating quality news sites and presenting the best sources for your worldwide research" it certainly succeeds. Navigation is simple, and the design and layout of the site is clear and attractive; furthermore, the site is provided in English, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Spanish and German versions.  Newbridge Memorial Hall

Runner-up in the 2004 series of the BBC's 'Restoration', Newbridge Memo is described as "the best surviving Art Deco theatre/cinema in Wales". Home of the Celynen Collieries Institute and Memorial Hall, it has been called a "remarkable testament to the men who gave their lives in the great war 1914 -18, [and] to the Miners of South Wales and their families who toiled to improve themselves through the social and education amenities that were to become world famous as the Miners' Institutes". However, following the decline of the mining industry, the Memo was forced to close in the 1980s and subsequently fell into disrepair. Today, however, the Memo is looking towards a future as a thriving community arts centre, though funding is needed to save the buildings. The campaign site for the Memo is an attractive and highly professional affair, while managing to evoke the project's evident 'rootedness' within the local community. Sections cover community action, the architectural importance of this "Jewel in the Valleys", and its appearance on the 'Restoration' show. Elsewhere, an excellent illustrated history traces the evolution of the building through various incarnations (live music venue, cinema) and its subsequent decline. Overall, this is an informative and engaging site, which can only help in the campaign to save the Newbridge Memo. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Nov 2005].

Highlights include the useful glossary of planning terms and the excellent 'UK local plan monitor', with information about the current progress and status of plans throughout the UK, plus links to the relevant local authority websites. Importantly, the site's authorship - Ian P. Butter BSc FRICS is "a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors with over 25 years professional experience in the field of planning" - gives its content credibility. The highlights of this invaluable site are the clickable maps with links to all the UK county councils, district councils and unitary authorities that maintain websites. Alternatively, sites can be accessed from a text listing, in county sequence for England and in simple alphabetical order for each of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Other useful features include a table of Council Political Compositions, and a number of local government related links. There are few aesthetic bells and whistles here, but what the site might lack in style it more than makes up for in its ease of use and functionality. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. CEBE is one of 24 Subject Centres which comprise part of the Higher Education Academy. According to its site, "the primary purpose of CEBE is to provide discipline based support for learning and teaching in the built environment subject communities of Architecture, Landscape, Urban Planning, Housing and Transport, Construction and Real Estate". Recently redesigned, CEBE's website is up-to-date and attractive, featuring news and events, subject and issue based materials for enhancing learning and teaching, projects and initiatives, and a useful publications section. Elsewhere, and excellent 'resources finder' provides a searchable directory of Internet sites for built environment academics, provided in association with the Resource Discovery Network. Europeantransport.com is, as its name implies, "the directory for and to the the transport industry in Europe", with a focus on freight rather than passenger transport. The site is attractively designed and logically organised, with links to companies primarily grouped by subject (including Transport Companies, Trucks & Commercial Vehicles, Trailers & Chassis, Containers, Freight & Cargo, and Others), but with a helpful country index also provided. Based in the Netherlands, the site's coverage of Dutch companies is particularly strong, while some other country and category combinations fail to bring up any links. Published by Streetwise Press, The Dictionary of Urbanism is described as "a comprehensive and often irreverent reference for everyone whose business or passion is cities. It defines and explains almost every word or phrase that a councillor, developer, built environment professional, community activist or urban explorer is likely to hear or read". This website accompanying the book inevitably does its best to drum up sales with glowing reviews and details of where to buy it, but is also an interesting resource in its own right. Content includes a regularly updated supplement to the book featuring new dictionary entries, a browsable list of entries, selected quotations, details of how to contribute, and a useful list of references, while a very good links page flags up other urbanism and related sites.
