The site itself is neatly designed, though its navigation seems unnecessarily complex with a plethora of menus and a lack of an obvious site hierarchy. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. The design of the site again is simple, with good navigation, and no eye-catching effects to detract from the artist's paintings; his photograph on most of the pages adds a personal touch to the site. Part of the Norwegian Byen Fornyelse (Foundation for Urban Renewal) site, this section looks at Poundbury, the urban extension to Dorchester (UK) initiated by HRH The Prince of Wales and the Duchy of Cornwall. The text (in English) covers key features of the scheme - the ten principles underlying it; the Poundbury philosophy; the design brief; the architecture; and the environment. The site also includes many superb quality photographs of Poundbury, taken by Audun Engh and Erling Okkenhaug in 1999 and 2000, though it would be useful to see some more recent updates. Founded in 2004, the goal of the International City Planners Network (ICPN) is to "help practicing planners develop and implement creative solutions to real-world planning problems by facilitating contacts with planners throughout the world". However, the Network welcomes all types of planners and people interested in planning, including urban designers, architects, landscape architects, social service planners, open space planners, economic development planners, environmental planners, infrastructure and transportation planners. From its home page onwards, the Network's sense of friendliness successfully pervades its website, with the display of a random member's photograph on the front page adding a personal touch. Once inside, visitors can use the 'Find a Planner' function, view a series of sections designed to help travelling planners learn more about specific featured cities (currently Paris, San Francsico, Vienna and Zurich) or browse a list of upcoming conferences. According to its site, the new Aberdeen Centre for Environmental Sustainability (ACES) will combine the strengths of three high-profile research institutions in the Aberdeen area - Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, the Macaulay Institute and the University of Aberdeen. The three partners propose to "bring together their expertise in land-use, ecology and socio-economics into interdisciplinary teams, aiming to resolve conflicting demands on the environment in a sustainable way". The site explains the rationale behind ACES, its intended research themes, and the anticipated benefits and next steps.
