The organisation's website is attractively designed and an impressive resource - it provides comprehensive information about each of the 300 plus properties in Historic Scotland's care, as well as searchable databases of Scotland's listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments. Other parts of the site feature up-to-date news and events listings, resources for schools, and a policy section with guidance on managing the historic environment. Parks & Gardens UK describes itself as "the leading online resource dedicated to historic parks and gardens across the whole of the United Kingdom", and has grown out of the old United Kingdom Database of Historic Parks and Gardens (UKPG) - Sapling.info's very first Site of the Month back in November 1999. The current site is elegant and appealing, as well as being a superb resource - visitors can use the 'Places & People' function to search for records and view images of more than 6,500 parks and gardens, as well as of the people who created and worked in them. There's also a very good introduction to garden history, up-to-date news and events coverage, and a resource area with additional images, maps, plans, and downloadable oral histories about life in and around historic parks and gardens. This site is a must for anyone interested in landscape architecture or historic gardens, and is deservedly awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 4 Jul 2010].

 The DiCamillo Companion to British & Irish Country Houses

The DiCamillo Companion is ambitious in its scope, describing itself as "a database that will list every British and Irish country house, standing or demolished". Amazingly, the site delivers - updated daily, its Database of Houses claims to contain records for more than 7,000 houses, with images for over 1,160 houses, and listings of over 230 houses where movie and TV filming has taken place; moreover, it is all the work of just one person, architectural historian Curt DiCamillo. A powerful search tool allows users to find the information they require, with each record featuring details (where available) about the architects, current condition, access, ownership, history and other references. The DiCamillo Companion also offers many features in addition to its Database of Houses. Highlights include a useful pronunciation guide to house names; access to Burke's Peerage & Gentry search; and an excellent section of more than 300 links to country house and related websites. The site itself is well-organised, and the effective use of colours, images and quotes gives it a classy, country house-inspired feel. Conversely, while the sheer number of graphics and extensive use of Java can make it a little slow to navigate, it seems a price worth paying in order to access its splendid content. Be in do doubt, the DiCamillo Companion is an incredible achievement, and an essential site for anyone interested in heritage. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 12 Nov 2007].

archINFORM describes itself as "the largest online database for international architecture"; certainly, it continues to grow, and now features over 27,000 built and unrealised projects from numerous architects and planners. The database is available in English or German versions, and can be searched by person, location, keywords or text query. Its coverage of 20th century architecture is especially strong, but this is in all respects a well designed and impressively comprehensive resource. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 4 Jul 2010].

BUBL is an Internet-based information service, aimed primarily at the UK higher education community, but freely accessible to anyone via the Web. The site's core feature is a searchable catalogue of 12,000 selected Internet resources, categorised according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Run by the Centre for Digital Library Research at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, one of BUBL's key strengths is the quality of its information - all featured resources are evaluated by BUBL staff, who also provide a succinct abstract and helpful subject terms for each resource. BUBL also ranks highly in terms of useability, with an interface which, though lackjing visual frills, is uncluttered and extremely easy to use. It's not quite clear how actively maintained BUBL still is, but it remains an excellent resource. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 4 Jul 2010].

Many stories are covered in depth, with useful hyperlinks to earlier stories on the same topic. The searchable archive includes all stories from 1 November 1997 onwards. Earth Designs is a garden design and build company based in East London. The company's style covers both traditional and contemporary landscapes and includes planting, decking, paving, lighting, water features and bespoke garden features. Beautifully designed using Flash, cleverly-titled sections cover 'Who on Earth' (the company's team and ethos), 'How on Earth' (services provided) and 'Where on Earth' (contact details and links). Meanwhile, 'Earth Works' provides an excellent illustrated project archive, featuring 'before', 'after' and 'during' photographs, as well as helpful accompanying text explaining the briefs and solutions. Officially known as the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, English Heritage is an Executive Non-departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The English Heritage site is a vast and sprawling source of information - however, it is well designed with a logical system of menus, a convenient search facility, and effective use of colour coding. Features of the site include sections covering news, policy, publications, places to visit, events, membership, archaeology, conservation, education, the public archive (National Monuments Record), and information from EH's regional offices.
