The organisation's website is attractively designed and an impressive resource - it provides comprehensive information about each of the 300 plus properties in Historic Scotland's care, as well as searchable databases of Scotland's listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments. Other parts of the site feature up-to-date news and events listings, resources for schools, and a policy section with guidance on managing the historic environment. Parks & Gardens UK describes itself as "the leading online resource dedicated to historic parks and gardens across the whole of the United Kingdom", and has grown out of the old United Kingdom Database of Historic Parks and Gardens (UKPG) - Sapling.info's very first Site of the Month back in November 1999. The current site is elegant and appealing, as well as being a superb resource - visitors can use the 'Places & People' function to search for records and view images of more than 6,500 parks and gardens, as well as of the people who created and worked in them. There's also a very good introduction to garden history, up-to-date news and events coverage, and a resource area with additional images, maps, plans, and downloadable oral histories about life in and around historic parks and gardens. This site is a must for anyone interested in landscape architecture or historic gardens, and is deservedly awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 4 Jul 2010].

BUBL is an Internet-based information service, aimed primarily at the UK higher education community, but freely accessible to anyone via the Web. The site's core feature is a searchable catalogue of 12,000 selected Internet resources, categorised according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Run by the Centre for Digital Library Research at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, one of BUBL's key strengths is the quality of its information - all featured resources are evaluated by BUBL staff, who also provide a succinct abstract and helpful subject terms for each resource. BUBL also ranks highly in terms of useability, with an interface which, though lackjing visual frills, is uncluttered and extremely easy to use. It's not quite clear how actively maintained BUBL still is, but it remains an excellent resource. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 4 Jul 2010].

BBC News Online is almost certainly the most comprehensive news site in the UK, and is continually updated. Content is organised into key sections - World, UK, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Business, Politics, Health, Education, Science/Nature, Technology and Entertainment - and includes a growing range of audio and video stories as well as written articles. Many stories are covered in depth, with useful hyperlinks to earlier stories on the same topic. The searchable archive includes all stories from 1 November 1997 onwards. Earth Designs is a garden design and build company based in East London. The company's style covers both traditional and contemporary landscapes and includes planting, decking, paving, lighting, water features and bespoke garden features. Beautifully designed using Flash, cleverly-titled sections cover 'Who on Earth' (the company's team and ethos), 'How on Earth' (services provided) and 'Where on Earth' (contact details and links). Meanwhile, 'Earth Works' provides an excellent illustrated project archive, featuring 'before', 'after' and 'during' photographs, as well as helpful accompanying text explaining the briefs and solutions. A separate HTML version manages to capture much of the elegance of its Flash sibling. An excellent site, awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 12 Nov 2007].

Officially known as the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, English Heritage is an Executive Non-departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The English Heritage site is a vast and sprawling source of information - however, it is well designed with a logical system of menus, a convenient search facility, and effective use of colour coding. Features of the site include sections covering news, policy, publications, places to visit, events, membership, archaeology, conservation, education, the public archive (National Monuments Record), and information from EH's regional offices.  The National Trust

Founded in 1895 by three Victorian philanthropists - Miss Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley - the National Trust now cares for over 248,000 hectares of countryside in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, plus almost 600 miles of coastline and more than 200 buildings and gardens of outstanding interest and importance. The Trust's website is vast - as well as details of all properties open to the public, there are sections covering (among other things) environment and conservation, holidays and travel, learning and discovery, policy and campaigns (with downloadable documents), and membership. The site also includes an excellent section of related links. The design of the site is attractive and logical, and a complete large text version is available for visually impaired users. In this impressive site - now hosted at its own dedicated domain - Jean Manco explains how to track down the history of buildings in the UK and Ireland. Her extensive guide covers too much ground to read in one gulp, so it helps that navigation is easy. Visitors can plunge in via type of building or type of source, such as images, maps and deeds, or make a beeline instead for the dictionaries of architects or regional gazetteers. The site also provides help with dating the fabric, identifying the style, and setting the building in the context of the manor, village or town. There are numerous bibliographies and links to archives, plus an online sample of primary sources, covering historic images and books such as Old Inns of London. Packed with illustrations and links throughout, and with a neat and simple interface, Researching Historic Buildings in the British Isles really is an outstanding resource.  RUDI - Resource for Urban Design Information

RUDI describes itself as "the leading urban design website", offering "high quality information about good practice in urban design". It is correct on both counts - RUDI is an outstanding resource, its virtual library containing full text documents, unique items and significant works which are difficult to locate or are out of print, as well as materials specially commissioned to fill gaps in urban design information. With annual personal subscriptions (for students) starting at nearly £50, access to RUDI's content (3,000 documents and 7,000 images) is not cheap; however, an increasing number of institutions subscribe to RUDI, meaning that many students and academics are able to use it, and the site does feature a significant amount of free content, including news, book reviews, classic urban texts, case studies, links and papers.
