Amok Interior Design
 http://www.amok.co.uk/

London-based Amok was established in 2000 and has since, according to the site, "established a reputation for providing contemporary creative interior design solutions". Beautifully executed using Flash, the firm's site seeks to demonstrate "how contemporary design can work in sympathy with any environment and lifestyle without becomming clichéd", and includes full details of the services offered as well as illustrated examples of Amok's press coverage. Other features include an extensive selection of photographs of rooms from recent projects, listed both by project and by room type; images of small architectural projects; and details of the 'Amok To Let' service, which helps clients who have 'buy to let' property and "want to make sure that it stands out from the crowd in the busy rental market". Overall, this is a rich and seductive site, awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 12 Sep 2006].

Rob Kennett Garden Design
 http://www.rkgardendesign.co.uk/

With this Flash-designed site, Rob Kennett explains how he has tried to create "a more evocative and inspiring website for those considering updating their garden... Rather than focus on services I believe images speak louder than words when it comes to inspiring people's enthusiasm about their much coveted outdoor space". First impressions are certainly good - the home page is compact and beautifully illustrated, with a musical accompaniment that is unintrusive and entirely appropriate. From here, well chosen icons signpost the site's main sections - a succinct account of the services offered; a gallery (not yet completed) of Kennett's traditional and contemporary designs; and a page of well-chosen links. Kennett has some interesting things to say about his links page, describing how he has tried to offer "useful links to what I believe are the best suppleirs in their fields, even other garden designers that are my favourites... All too often garden designers shy away from recommending their peers - I believe this is wrong. Garden design should be much more collaborative. If garden designers fear competition rather than embracing it perhaps it suggests a fear of the limits of their imagination - which is not something, I am pleased to say, I worry about". Overall, Kennett's clear ideas about what he wants his site to achieve have helped create something much more interesting than the norm - a web presence that is informative, yet also distinctive and engaging. BALTIC The Centre for Contemporary Art
 http://www.balticmill.com/

Opened in Summer 2002, BALTIC is a major international centre for contemporary visual art situated in Gateshead in the North East of England. BALTIC has a premier site on the south bank of the River Tyne and lies right at the heart of the regeneration area of Gateshead Quays. Recently redesigned, the site has benefited from dispensing with its separate Flash and HTML versions, instituting a new HTML version that is much less grey and intimidating than its predecessor. Content is plentiful and well organised, with sections covering exhibitions, visitor information, the BALTIC's learning programme, and a comprehensive history and background of the BALTIC project. A worthwhile links page features sites relating to Newcastle, Gateshead and national and international art. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 11 Sep 2006].

The Conservation Register
 http://www.conservationregister.com/

The Conservation Register holds information on conservator-restorers in the UK and Ireland. Searches of the comprehensive Conservation Register database can be carried out by object type and geographical location, or by an individual conservator's name; results provide lots of information about each company, and are neatly displayed. Meanwhile, a highly informative 'Guidance' section provides help on caring for art, antiques and decorative features of buildings, with useful features such as a conservation glossary and advice on storage. A worthwhile page of external links is also provided. [GAS, 11 Sep 2006].

Michael Dan Archer - Sculptor and Public Artist
 http://www.archersculpture.co.uk/

Lincolnshire-based Michael Dan Archer is a sculptor and public artist who has exhibited widely throughout Britain, including solo exhibitions at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Djanogly Gallery at The University of Nottingham. He has also exhibited and made works at sculpture symposiums in Japan, S.Korea, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Dubai and the Czech Republic. The highlight of this enjoyable site is a 'gallery' section with details and good quality images of Archer's sculptures and public art commissions, which use media as diverse as granite, marble, steel, bronze, neon and light projection. Elsewhere, the site features some interesting essays, the CV of the artist, details of his involvement at various international symposia, and a worthwhile links page. The site itself is neatly and attractively designed, though if there is one quibble, it is that the grey text and blue links don't quite provide enough visual contrast with the navy background. Morris Associates Exhibition Design
 http://www.exhibitiondesign.com/

This site has been produced to provide background information on Morris Associates Exhibition Design and examples of the firm's previous experience. Ambitiously, it is also intended to act as "an instant brochure to define our style and minimalist design approach that might attract client and projects with similar objectives", as well as having "the potential to interest potential designers and working partners who have a similar design ethos". The site's home page certainly creates a positive visual impression, though it takes a few moments to realise that this is merely a splash page linking through to the client directory section. Once there, the true structure and content of the site is revealed, with a very clear menu system and effective contrast between the background and text. Features include a short company profile, illustrated coverage of the firm's services, an excellent collection of illustrated case studies (each with interesting and thorough descriptions) and a page of links to other sites related to Morris Associates' work. Elsewhere, a projects section features some good quality photographs illustrating the company's expertise, but lacks explanatory text - it would be useful to annotate the images, or perhaps simply merge this content into the case studies section. Overall, however, Morris Associates have created a sleek, intuitive and content-rich site that provides an effective showcase for their distinctive design philosophy. [GAS, 11 Sep 2006].

Spence Harris Hogan Associates
 http://www.shh.co.uk/

London-based Spence Harris Hogan Associates (SHH) are an interior design and architecture practice who employ "a number of new construction concepts within their leisure, retail, commercial and domestic projects". The site is refreshingly simple, with a clear and attractive design. As well as a company profile, the site features up-to-date news about the practice, a look inside its studio, and a list of existing clients. The case studies section provides an excellent showcase for the company's work, including bars, restaurants and hotels; brands; exhibition and lighting; housing; offices; signage; shops; and sport and leisure. Numerous projects are featured, with each case study benefiting from some excellent quality images and insightful annotation. [GAS, 11 Sep 2006].
