Architecture.com
 http://www.architecture.com/

Ever modest, Architecture.com describes itself as "one of the world's most extensive built environment portals". It is certainly true - this well-organised site, run by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), claims to have 250,000 pages of useful information about architecture, architects, and RIBA itself, including news, competitions, events, jobs, and many other useful features. One of the flagship services is the RIBA library catalogue - a free, regularly updated index to 175,000 articles from 300 journals in 20 languages, 35,000 books, and over 1 million items in the special collections. Elsewhere, a helpful RIBA Links Library covers over 1000 architecture-related websites - including Sapling of course. Some might find the grey interface a little bleak, but that barely detracts from what is probably the definitive architecture resource - excellent. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 6 Nov 2005].

CASA - Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis
 http://www.casa.ucl.ac.uk/

This site describes CASA's research work in measuring, modelling and visualising the built environment. The Centre's background is in the use of computers and models in planning using contemporary techniques such as GIS, decision support systems, various kinds of mathematical models, geodemographics and visualisation. CASA's focus, and the purpose of its site, is to "make all this intelligible and communicable to less expert users than ourselves". Visually, the site gets off to an excellent start by presenting visitors with an attractive and logical interface; the home page offers up-to-date snippets of news, while clearly labelled sections provide more in depth material. An extensive 'Research' section allows users to browse by theme or project; 'People' provides informative profiles of all the CASA staff; and 'Publications' features over 70 freely downloadable (PDF format) working papers. The discussion forum, however, appears to no longer work, which is disappointing. Overall, however, CASA's site can be judged a resounding success - the Centre sets out to make its research "intelligible and communicable" and does just that, creating a site that is attractive to look at and a pleasure to navigate. Add in its rich, up-to-date content, and CASA's site is quite possibly the best university site Sapling has reviewed - truly an excellent resource. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 24 Aug 2005].

Foster and Partners
 http://www.fosterandpartners.com/

This is a very rich and elegantly designed site, available in HTML or Flash versions. Happily, the HTML version is no poor relation, with access to the full content of the site; the Flash version, with its clever effects, can be a little infuriating if you wish to find information quickly and without fuss. In either version, sections cover news, studio, contacts and information (with details of awards, competetion entries and publications). However, the highlight of the site is its full list of Foster and Partners' projects, which can be organised chronologically, alphabetically, by location or by building type. There is a short article about each scheme, accompanied by some quite stunning images, including some movies. In all, this is a splendid insight into one of Britain's most celebrated and enduring architects and practices, deservedly awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 11 Aug 2005].

The Urban Conservation Glossary
 http://www.trp.dundee.ac.uk/research/glossary/glossary.html

Based at the University of Dundee's School of Town and Regional Planning, the Glossary describes itself as "an attempt to impart some of the range, complexity, and enormous interest and satisfaction that can be found in conservation work, going beyond a simple catalogue of terms". This is an impressively comprehensive resource - there are eighty entries under the letter 'A' alone, for example - and a must for anyone interested in urban conservation. Many entries are illustrated (using some excellent photographs), and cross-referenced to other entries using hyperlinks. This site was Sapling.info's Site of the Month back in January 2000 - a decade on, it seems fitting to award it that status again. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 4 Jul 2010].

Journal of Transport Economics and Policy
 http://www.jtep.org/

Based at the University of Bath, JTEP describes itself as "the prime source of extensive, high quality research devoted to the economics of transport and its interface with transport policy". The site features background about the journal and its submission guidelines, but its highlight is the comprehensive indexing and article service covering 1967 to 2000. Every article published in the journal between these dates can be downloaded as a PDF free of charge, making the site a really valuable resource. More recent issues can be accessed by institutional subscribers via the IngentaConnect service. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 23 Mar 2009].

 http://www.olivebay.co.uk/

Creating "gardens to revive your senses", Olivebay is based in North London and run by Chris Maton, whose career in design and construction spans twenty years and includes presenting his own garden show on UK Style and guest appearances on GMTV and This Morning. The firm's site is attractively designed and highly evocative, the extensive use of lovely photographs successfully communicating the ideas of 'relaxation', 'scent', 'nature' and 'colour' that are flagged up on the home page. Accessed via a very clear menu system, sections include background about Olivebay and its services, a nicely illustrated portfolio showcasing its work, a list of FAQs and a page of related links. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 23 Mar 2009].

New Ground Landscapes
 http://www.newgroundlandscapes.co.uk/

Under its former name of Adam Frost Landscapes, New Ground Landscapes won a gold medal at Chelsea in 2007 in the City Gardens category of the show. 'Realistic Retreat' was judged to give a realistic idea of how a small city garden could look, given good design, considered planting and creative flair. This appealing, easy to navigate site provides examples of design, construction and maintenance undertaken with case studies, plus useful links to additional gardening websites. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [DS/GAS, 10 Nov 2008].
