Shelter describes itself as "the UK campaigning charity for homeless and badly housed people", and its site is well-designed and packed with information, with separate subsites covering England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Highlights include full information about Shelter's projects and campaigns; housing advice, including an excellent series of guides; and a useful 'policy and practice' section with downloadable statistics and factsheets. Elsewhere, a comprehensive bookshop section provides an online ordering facility for Shelter's books and guides. Overall, this is an impressive site, awarded a Sapling Commendation.  Brandon Heritage Project

The Brandon Heritage Project is ongoing, its author aiming to record the Suffolk town's history. The site lists historical information of the schools, churches, streets, houses and parks, particularly from the nineteenth century onwards. Many references are taken from Kelly's Suffolk Directory, but the author does welcome "holiday snaps, family photos, family trees, newspaper clippings, anecdotes and reminiscences", which in time will no doubt add to the site's interest. Already, the site is packed with photos, and is easy to navigate. There are other websites on Brandon, but this is by far the best and can only improve. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. Based in Manchester and Liverpool, CUBE describes itself as one of the leading centres for contemporary architecture in Europe, "dedicated to broadcasting the ideas and issues that lie behind the buildings, spaces and environments that make up our built environment". The site's content is impressive, offering news on forthcoming exhibitions and seminars (with an archive of previous stories), plus a best practice directory, a useful education section, and a series of enjoyable and informative 'city tours' of Manchester. The design of the site is also excellent, with clear menus, beautiful images and effective use of colour coding. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Mar 2006].

Guardian Unlimited describes itself as the "best daily newspaper on the world wide web", and is probably right. Certainly, it is one of the best UK newspaper sites, combining content from the Guardian and Observer papers with dedicated online features. A searchable archive contains all articles from 1 September 1998 onwards; moreover, unlike many of its competitors, access to archived articles remains free of charge. The site itself is well-designed, with easy access to key sections such as arts, politics and business. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Mar 2006].

 Hackney Planning

For several years, Hackney has been at the forefront of making local planning information readily accessible to the public. When Sapling previously visited (in March 2003), we were disappointed to find the previously excellent Hackney Planning site rather out of date. Fortunately, all is now well and the site is once again an exemplar of its type. Users can access an excellent archive of planning applications, browsing by street or searching by postcode. In each case, a copy of the original application, details of the decision taken, and architectural plans (for current applications only) are provided, all in easily accessible PDF format. In addition, visitors can download a copy of the Hackney Unitary Development Plan (UDP), and see progress on the Local Development Framework (LDF) that will replace it; download planning application forms; or find out more about the work of the Building and Development Control Service. The site also offers excellent coverage of Hackney's 22 conservation areas, including descriptions, photographs and maps. Overall, Hackney Planning is a fine example of how the Internet can be used to improve transparency and access to information in the planning process. Awarded a Sapling Commendation.  The Newport Ship

In the summer of 2002 the well preserved remains of a mediaeval ship were discovered during excavation works for a new Arts Centre on the banks of the River Usk in central Newport, Wales. It is one of the most complete examples of a ship believed to have been built around 1465. This website for the Friends of the Newport Ship includes lots of information about the discovery of the ship, ongoing research, and the activities and work of the Friends group. The site is well designed, packed with good quality photographs, and is a mine of interesting and useful information. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Mar 2006].

Adrienne Chinn is an interior designer working in and around London. Established for six years, the company describes itself as having "a wealth of experience from dozens of major projects". The site features interesting reviews of these many projects, enlivened by good quality photographs and an insightful commentary from the designer. Other sections cover the history of the company, details of its fees structure, and a series of useful articles written by Adrienne Chinn. However, the site's highlight is undoubtedly its two excellent links directories - a "Design Directory of Interior Design Suppliers in the UK", with hundreds of links organised into more than thirty categories, and a smaller "Directory of American Interior Design Firms, Interior Designers and Architecture Consultants Operating in the USA". With a design that is simple but quite functional, Adrienne Chinn has created an impressive site - an engaging showcase for her work as well as an important interior design resource.
