 Newbridge Memorial Hall

Runner-up in the 2004 series of the BBC's 'Restoration', Newbridge Memo is described as "the best surviving Art Deco theatre/cinema in Wales". Home of the Celynen Collieries Institute and Memorial Hall, it has been called a "remarkable testament to the men who gave their lives in the great war 1914 -18, [and] to the Miners of South Wales and their families who toiled to improve themselves through the social and education amenities that were to become world famous as the Miners' Institutes". However, following the decline of the mining industry, the Memo was forced to close in the 1980s and subsequently fell into disrepair. Today, however, the Memo is looking towards a future as a thriving community arts centre, though funding is needed to save the buildings. The campaign site for the Memo is an attractive and highly professional affair, while managing to evoke the project's evident 'rootedness' within the local community. Sections cover community action, the architectural importance of this "Jewel in the Valleys", and its appearance on the 'Restoration' show. Elsewhere, an excellent illustrated history traces the evolution of the building through various incarnations (live music venue, cinema) and its subsequent decline. Overall, this is an informative and engaging site, which can only help in the campaign to save the Newbridge Memo. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Nov 2005].

Described as "the online planning aid service", planning-applications.co.uk aims to provide independent professional guidance and advice on town planning and related issues, and contains a wealth of information. Sections cover key areas of interest, such as making a planning application, use classes, permitted development and development plans. Highlights include the useful glossary of planning terms and the excellent 'UK local plan monitor', with information about the current progress and status of plans throughout the UK, plus links to the relevant local authority websites. Importantly, the site's authorship - Ian P. Butter BSc FRICS is "a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors with over 25 years professional experience in the field of planning" - gives its content credibility. The highlights of this invaluable site are the clickable maps with links to all the UK county councils, district councils and unitary authorities that maintain websites. Alternatively, sites can be accessed from a text listing, in county sequence for England and in simple alphabetical order for each of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Other useful features include a table of Council Political Compositions, and a number of local government related links. There are few aesthetic bells and whistles here, but what the site might lack in style it more than makes up for in its ease of use and functionality. Awarded a Sapling Commendation.  CABE - Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment

CABE, which replaced the UK's Royal Fine Art Commission in 1999, describes itself as "the champion for architecture in England". It seeks to improve people's lives by promoting high standards in the design of buildings and the spaces between them. The site is excellent - professionally designed and well organised, with sections covering news and events, publications, policy, research, regions, skills and education. A helpful page of related links is also provided, and reports and other documents are available to download in PDF format throughout the site. The recently launched CABE Digital Library is also very good, giving "free access to detailed information on some of the UK's best buildings and public spaces". Awarded a Sapling Commendation. Abacus USA Construction Index is a directory of recommended online resources for US architects, engineers and other construction professionals. Its is an excellent resource, with a searchable index providing access to 1,500 websites, online documents, case studies and newsletters; alternatively, the site can be browsed by resource type or topic. The homepage is perhaps a little busy, but otherwise the site is well laid out, with a simple and uncluttered design. Note that while the construction-index.com site is currently being rebuilt to focus on US content only, UK content can now be found on a sister website, Archinet UK Building Directory. awarded a Sapling Commendation. Now part of Elsevier, Architectural Press upholds a long and prestigious history of publishing a broad range of books, from classical theory to new technology, and describes itself as providing "invaluable technical information for architects and designers, both student and professional". The Architectural Press site is divided into two 'sub-sites', one for North America (prices in US dollars) and one for everywhere else (prices in pound sterling), but the content is essentially the same. The front page gives coverage to new or featured titles, and users can also browse books by theme, and search the catalogue by author, title, keyword or ISBN. Information about specific titles is well laid out and comprehensive, with valuable features including sample chapters and author biographies. The site also serves as a bookstore, with the option to purchase titles directly from the publisher. Overall, this is a useful, nicely designed, and enjoyable site, awarded a Sapling Commendation. Now under the umbrella of Transport for London (TfL), this is a well-designed and comprehensive site, with background information about the DLR, and sections covering areas such as the history and technology of DLR; tickets and travel; tourist information; press releases; and feedback. The site also features full details about all the latest DLR proposals - extensions to London City Airport (opening December 2005), Woolwich, Barking, Dagenham and Stratford - with information about project background, routes, consultation, and environmental issues. The Transport Studies Group comprises a multi-disciplinary team of research and teaching staff within the School of the Built Environment at the University of Westminster's Marylebone Road campus in London. The design of the site is looking a little stale, but its content remains excellent - course information, a useful list of publications, comprehensive details about research projects (many with reports or summaries available to download), and a staff list. The highlight is the excellent links section, now featuring more than 1400 transport-related web links, including transport research groups at UK universities, train operators, bus companies, Passenger Transport Executives, professional bodies, interest groups, journals, and more.
