| Description | |
2009 has been a big year for Bus Rapid Transit in the UK. The Cambridgeshire Guided Bus (CGB) and Swansea ftrMetro started public service, and the Luton-Dunstable scheme moved into the implementation phase. Preparation for major new schemes in East London, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester, the West of England and elsewhere has moved forward apace whilst in places as diverse as Kent Thameside, Crawley, Bradford, Leeds, and Runcorn, BRT or “BRT Like” schemes building on proven technologies and integrated with other public transport services in their areas continued to provide reliable transit service.
BRTuk’s 5th Annual Conference is in Cardiff, an aspiring sustainable transport city and seat of the devolved Welsh Government, co-funders of ftrMetro in neighbouring Swansea. An excellent programme focussed on delivery and operation of BRT has been assembled with presentations highlighting BRT systems in the UK and around the world. The Conference will also mark the first of the new BRTuk Bursaries.
As usual, the conference delivers excellent value with prices having been held at last year’s levels and additional discounts for up to two further delegates from the same organisation. New members can take advantage of a conference/membership package taking them through to April 2011. So join us at the Hilton Hotel, Cardiff on Monday 30th November and Tuesday 1st December for the latest in BRTuk’s “don’t miss” series of conferences. |

Transport Modelling Forum

| End date | |
10 June 2009 |
| Place | |
Chelsea F.C., London, United Kingdom |
| Link | |
Link to website |
| Description | |
Last years Transport Modelling Forum challenged the way in which we view our existing transport systems and their performance. We discussed the need to review the way in which we traditionally carry out modelling.
Are new models required? How do newer models interface with the existing ones, in which we have invested so much in terms of data, methodological development and software?
We cannot ignore the challenges brought by the recession or assume that growth in travel demand is a certainty. Does that mean that forecasted figures in databases like TEMPRO are still credible?
New modes such as high-speed rail at a national scale as well as the carbon challenge provide more problems to solve. Can our existing toolkit provide the answers?
For the 4th Annual Transport Modelling Forum we have chosen the theme ‘Changing Requirements and Challenging Times’. We have established an exciting line-up of top-class speakers in the field, who will each deal with one of the many issues facing the transport modelling profession including:
• Gavin Gaunt, Head of the NATA refresh at the Department for Transport • Charlene Rohr, Director of Modelling RAND • Dr Denvil Coombe, Principle of the Denvil Coombe Practice • Dr Gerard Whelan the Divisional Director and Steve Lowe, MVA • Prof Andrew Daly University of Leeds • Clare Lindsay, Technical Director and Dr Ian Williams, WSP • Andrew Potter the Divisional Director at Mouchel

The Summit will explore the strategy, policy and delivery required to forge resilient local economies which can:
• Ride economic punches now and in the future • Adapt to changing circumstances and be alert to opportunities • Repel and reduce future impacts from climate change and peak oil • Ensure that no one community or cohort of people lose out.

| Description | |
10am-4pm
This seminar aims to increase the understanding amongst clients, designers and constructors of the benefits of modern timber frame techniques. The event will bring together some of the leading practitioners in the south west region to share experience and show how the industry can face the challenges of increasing standards, reducing costs and reduced construction times. One response to the current slump in the contruction industry is to delay plans and projects and then continue as usual with the same techniques as before. However, when the market returns there will be demand for more houses and public buildings to be completed quickly at reduced cost and to be completed quickly at reduced cost and to a higher standard. How can Timber frame construction address this challenge and how can it help you meet the Code for Sustainable Homes? What have been experiences of construction professionals that have moved away from traditional brick and block construction? How can timber frame reduce cost and risks?
The seminar will cover:
Advances in Timber Frame Technology - Philip Carney, Business Development, BRE Understanding Closed Panel Construction - Robert Le Masurier, Commercial Director, Advanced Panel Systems. The German Experience - Giles Hurst, Main Agent, Hanse Haus Design and Engineering - pushing the envelope - Dr Jim Allen, Partner, E&M West A Contractors Perspective - Delivering the complete package - Mike Boon, Partnership Manager, Connaught Partnerships. The Client Perspective - Mike Kay, Chief Executive, Yarlington Housing Group. |

| Description | |
The global economic downturn has had a significant effect on the funding for transport schemes and service delivery and these impacts are likely to increase as central and local Government completes detailed spending reviews and finds ways to reduce total expenditure. All of the main political parties are made public statements indicating cuts in public spending will be necessary and this conference is designed to evaluate and examine the likely impacts of these fiscal changes on the transport sector. The speakers will focus on their experiences of planning for the likely changes in transport budget, the evaluation of reduced spending in the transport sector and the impacts and efficiencies they have identified. It is going to be increasing difficult to secure revenue and capital funding for transport projects so how do we ensure they don’t fall to the bottom of the agenda?
On 18th November, this conference will offer a unique opportunity to hear from a wide range of speakers and decision makers from Central Government, Local Government and the bus industry about how we can continue to enhance transport service delivery despite increasing budgetary pressure.
Topics include organisational structures, balancing budgets between service areas, making the best use of the 2008 Local Transport Act and LTP3 process and getting the best value for money from concessionary fares.
Why You Should Attend
It is clear that the economic downturn is going to result in a reduction in the total amount of money available for the delivery of public sector services. This reduction in spending is going to have an impact on the structure and delivery of transport services and this conference explores these likely impacts and provides insight into case studies where these changes are being managed effectively.
This conference will provide an opportunity for the generation and discussion of ideas on how to maintain service delivery and ensure the carbon reduction and accessibility objectives are still achieved. |

| Description | |
Most islands cannot provide all resources required to maintain a large seasonal tourist population and in many cases basic requirements such as water and energy, as well as agricultural produce, need to be imported.
The impact of large seasonal population increases in the community and the resulting socio-economic factors need to be carefully evaluated, as well as issues related to transportation and communication, all of which should be part of an overall strategy.
Different islands present a variety of diverse problems but much can be learned by sharing experiences in an appropriate form - Island Sustainability 2010 provides that opportunity. |
