Central Government

The Countryside Agency
 http://www.countryside.gov.uk/

The Countryside Agency (formed in 1999 from the merger of the Countryside Commission and Rural Development Commission) works to achieve the best for the English countryside through conservation, research, and influencing central and local government. Features of the Agency's site include an up-to-date 'press centre'; coverage of its work and projects, including the Landscape Access and Recreation and Commission for Rural Communities divisions; and details of publications. Recently redesigned, the site is quite attractive; however, the revised menu layout lacks the clarity of the old (Sapling Commendation-winning) site, its confusing format and choice of headings making it quite hard to locate specific information. [GAS, 7 Nov 2005].

Environment Agency
 http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/

The Environment Agency is the leading public organisation for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales, with responsibilities which include regulating industry, maintaining flood defences and water resources, and improving wildlife habitats. The site is organised broadly into sections covering 'your environment', 'business and industry', 'science and research' and 'jobs', with additional sections covering regional issues, and specific topics such as air quality, flood and waste. Overall, this is a nice looking site, offering access to a wide variety of environmental information, tools, resources and features. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 23 Jan 2006].

Forestry Commission of Great Britain
 http://www.forestry.gov.uk/

The Forestry Commission of Great Britain is the government agency responsible for the protection and expansion of Britain's forests and woodlands. The redesigned home page is unfortunately rather complicated, with a lack of hierarchy making it difficult to read the site's structure; 'Communities', 'Consultations', 'Learning', 'Research', 'Sustainable development' and 'Working in forestry' are among the areas covered by the site, together with dedicated sections for England, Scotland and Wales. News stories and a library section (featuring facts, figures, publications, and a very good links section) are also provided, while a clickable map allows users to find details of places to visit in their area. [GAS, 28 May 2006].
