The US-based Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation is an inter-disciplinary professional organisation which provides a forum for communication and exchange of information among its members. It is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of historic landscapes in all their variety, from formal gardens and public parks to rural expanses. Sections cover information about the AHLP, membership, annual meetings and special projects. Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (IEMA)

IEMA was formed in September 1999, following the merger of the Institute of Environmental Management, the Environmental Auditor's Registration Association, and the Institute of Environmental Assessment. Today, the Institute is a leading UK membership organisation dedicated to the promotion of the goal of sustainable development and to the professional development of individuals involved in environmental management and assessment - whether in business, government, consultancy or the regulators. This nicely designed site includes sections on membership, training, events and regions, plus a useful publications section, with documents available to download in PDF format. Elsewhere, the site includes information about CEAM (Centre for Environmental Assessment and Management), the research and project execution arm of the IEMA, with many downloadable reports. International Association for People-Environment Studies (IAPS)

IAPS "works to facilitate communication on the relationships between people and their physical environment", and describes itself as "the forum for scholars who have an interest in an interdisciplinary exchange and in the study of the transactions and interrelationships between people and their socio-physical surroundings (including built and natural environments) and the relation of this field to other social and biological sciences and to the environmental professions" - thus, members of IAPS represent a diversity of professions, including architects, city and regional planners, landscape architects, interior designers and psychologists. Features of the site include the history, aims and objectives of IAPS; background on the notion of 'people-environment studies'; details of the association's boards, networks and members; news, events and publications; and a useful page of links. Though the design and navigation of the site is generally good, the main text throughout the site is too small to read comfortably. [GAS, 16 Sep 2006].

International Economic Development Council (IEDC)

The International Development Council was created through the merger of the Council for Urban Economic Development (CUED) and the American Economic Development Council (AEDC), and descibes itself as the United States' "largest economic development professional association". The site is rich in content - as well as background about the Council, it includes details of conferences and events, professional development information, and a 'members only' area, while other features include a resources area with publications and links. National Charrette Institute

The US-based National Charrette Institute describes itself as "a nonprofit educational institution that helps communities achieve healthy transformation through collaborative planning processes that harness the talents and energies of all interested parties to create and support a buildable plan". According to the site, the Institute aims to achieve this through training, research and facilitation - "teaching the art and science of the Charrette and the Dynamic Planning process; advancing the field of community involvement; and facilitating collaborative problem solving to promote healthy communities". Features of the site include the obvious "What is a charette?" (essentially a creative and intense collaborative planning process); sections introducing the concepts of 'healthy communities' and 'dynamic planning'; and information about the Institute's mission and values, people and programmes, including a monthly newsletter. The richest part of the site is its resources section (listed under 'Tools for you'), which includes a good page of links, NCI publications and PDF presentations to download. The site is well laid-out with a professional if rather sombre appearance; the addition of more images would help communicate the sense of 'creativity' which is portrayed as such an important part of the Charette process. RTPI - Royal Town Planning Institute

Founded in 1914, the RTPI is the UK institute "chartered to advance the science and art of national, regional and local town planning for the benefit of the public". Among the site's many features are sections covering planning advice, information about the RTPI, careers and membership, resources for schools, sustainable development, planning policy, current consultations, press releases, and RTPI news from Planning magazine. A handy publications section has many RTPI documents available to download free of charge in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format. However, though logically organised, the site's design doesn't do justice to its excellent content, with a monotonous blue interface and rather text-heavy pages. [GAS, 29 May 2006].

Founded by Sir Ebenezer Howard in 1899 to promote the idea of the Garden City, the TCPA is Britain's oldest charity concerned with planning and the built environment. Today, the TCPA campaigns for more integrated planning based on the principles of accessibility, sustainability, diversity, and community cohesion. Sections of the TCPA site cover news, policy (including downloadable policy statements), projects, events, membership and publications; the layout is quite neat, if a little texty. Based in the US, the mission of the Urban Land Institute is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land to enhance the total environment. The site has an attractive and professional look, while its content has recently been much improved and expanded: sections cover 'meetings and education', 'research' (with case studies and policy papers), 'programmes and services', 'news' and 'in the community'.
