CAST - Centre for Alternative and Sustainable Transport
 http://www.staffs.ac.uk/schools/sciences/geography/cast/

Based at Staffordshire University, CAST describes itself as "the only research unit anywhere in the world wholly focussed on non-motorised, sustainable transport". The site is small but interesting, with basic information about the Centre, including people, projects and events; a resources section, including a list of publications and a conference archive; and a page of links to related sites. Overall, the site itself is very clearly organised, though some parts - such as the events listing - are very out of date. [GAS, 2 Oct 2006].

Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR)
 http://www.shu.ac.uk/cresr/

The Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam Univeristy is a well established research institute undertaking research and consultancy activities in a number of areas, including housing policy, urban policy, social and economic regeneration, labour market studies, gender studies, transport policy, planning and community studies. CRESR's site is excellent, featuring full coverage of the Centre's projects and publications, with many documents available to download. [MG/RS/GAS, 3 May 2006].

Transport Operations Research Group (TORG)
 --NEW URL-- http://www.ceg.ncl.ac.uk/research/transport/

Formed at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1972, TORG is in the University's School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. Now incorporated as part of the wider School site, TORG's pages include the information you would expect, with details about staff, PhD students, events, research projects and publications. However, the helpful links section unfortunately no longer exists. [GAS, 27 Aug 2006].

Transport Studies Group - University of Westminster
 http://www.wmin.ac.uk/transport/

The Transport Studies Group comprises a multi-disciplinary team of research and teaching staff within the School of the Built Environment at the University of Westminster's Marylebone Road campus in London. The design of the site is looking a little stale, but its content remains excellent - course information, a useful list of publications, comprehensive details about research projects (many with reports or summaries available to download), and a staff list. The highlight is the excellent links section, now featuring more than 1400 transport-related web links, including transport research groups at UK universities, train operators, bus companies, Passenger Transport Executives, professional bodies, interest groups, journals, and more. At the time of review, the site is in the process of being redesigned. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 12 Aug 2005].

TRL - Transport Research Laboratory
 http://www.trl.co.uk/

Berkshire-based TRL describes itself as "an internationally recognised centre of excellence providing world class research, consultancy, advice and testing for all aspects of transport", and claims to be the largest centre for transport research in the UK. The site is slickly designed, and logically divided into sections which give overviews and project information relating to TRL's areas of work - including 'infrastructure', 'transportation', 'safety', 'environment', and 'developing world'. Up-to-date news, events and publications sections add further value. [GAS, 6 Jun 2006].
